[Beginner] Trimming mill gib?
Hi,
I'm guessing my ways and/or gib might be worn on this 30+ year old mill.
The gib is sticking out of the back, reducing my travel by 25mm.
What to do here, cut that 25mm off, make a new gib?
Cheers

You could although they can be tricky to make, being long and slender.
Perhaps try some thin shim behind it - even start with a layer or two of Al foil to get a feel for the thickness you need.

Abom79 did a gib repair video recently and shimmed the gib.

Probably worth watching.

There is another shimming a gib video from H&W on YouTube https://youtu.be/qsKk9OajQLg which is also a good video.

Thanks, here's a photo of the front with the gib "flush" at the back, I assume it would be normal for my shimmed gib to protrude 30mm at the front?

Sorry if this is a daft question but are the ways on the gib side tapered to "match" the gibs, like if the gib taper is 1:80 is that repeated (in reverse) on that side of the ways, so you get a uniform mating surface on the dovetail?
Cheers

The answer is YES the tapers would match otherwise it just wouldn't work properly. In regards to your previous question about your shimmed Gib, to me I think 30mm would be excessive unless the Gib had been originally made quite long.

Hi Guys,
I suspect that the gib is a little long. On my mill the gibs are about 10 mm short of the full length. When adjusted the screw head is just about flush with the casting. I have mine adjusted on the "X" so that it is very slightly tight, this removes all the end play in the table. Before adjusting "X" I could get several thou back to front rock.Best Regards:
