It all depends on the quality of HSS you require. If you don't mind cheap, softish HSS that does not hold an edge for long and anneals with too much heat; go the Chinese/Indian made route. If you want a quality product then look at Swedish, Aussie or US made. 10-15% cobalt in the mix makes a very tough and heat resistant steel that will hold an edge for ages. A bit hard when grinding; but holds an edge.

    Thanks Pete,

I don't mind it not being Rolls Royce, and I can do with the practice of learning to sharpen, as it get dull, it beets the last quote of $29 + postage for a piece of 10mm x 10mm M2,

its seams the money is in the peripheral's for some:

The hardest thing I will be working with at this stage will be mild steel,
after I have mastered the aluminium, and brass.

I have never seen a more compelling argument to go with insert tooling...
If your lathe has a 10mm tool height grab a SCLCR1010E06 or if it's a 12mm height grab a SCFCR1212H06, should get either for around USD10 delivered off ebay / AliExpress (note the 06 at the end denotes that it is for CC##0602 don't grab the 09 version's as they use a bigger insert)
Grab a box of inserts, CCMT060204 for steel or CCGT060204 for aluminum, this is another say USD22

Total around USD32 which is roughly AUD43 with the poor conversion rate, sounds like a bit for a single cutter, but that is with a box of 10 inserts
If you decide later down the track you want a nice boring bar, grab a S08K-SCLCR06 USD12 & S12M-SCLCR06 USD12 and you already have the inserts to suit, can bore holes as small as 10mm and you can focus on making things instead of turning metal into scrap...

    Default CDCO BXA tool holders

I bought a batch of BXA tool holders from these guys about 9 years ago and it was time to get some more.

14 BXA holders will fit into a US Mail 20lb flat rate box, landed price was AUD22.80 per holder, about 1/3 of that price is postage.

Like last time, some of the holders are a thou or 3 tight on the tool post and need to be skimmed to fit.

5 or 6 years ago I bought 24 BXA holders from CDCO in the US, and like Bob at least half of them needed a quick skim for a perfect fit, But considering H & F here in Aus want like $60.00 each for them it's well worth buying them from the US at $9.00 per each plus post.

    Default M&G Productions Derrimut Victoria

These blokes started listing some tooling on ebay a couple of months ago and what caught my eye was their parallel set which was much cheaper than any of the other usual suspects and even cheaper than Gameco when they used to have them in stock. I contacted the seller to see if he could do local pickup and he invited me to visit their warehouse which is located in Derrimut VIC and I finally got the time to do so.

I met with the managing director, Felix Mu, who was very keen to give me the background of his company some of which you can read about in the attached catalogue. Unlike the tooling resellers we deal with out here, he is not just a reseller but the actual manufacturer of the cutting tools he sells. Apparently he moved to Australia with his wife to get away from the air pollution in China and while he still manages his manufacturing business he realised there is no local equivalent of CDCO which is a gap I think he hopes to fill.

All of the cutting tools he sells are made in his factory while other tooling such as rotary tables, vices, chucks and I think his insert tooling is made by other manufactures he deals with back in China. He has a large variety of tooling in stock at his warehouse and can order in just about anything else you can think of. Talking with him reminded me of talking to some of the exhibitors at the manufacturing expo only he was prepared to sell individual items not just a container load.

This was my haul for the day, all for $95.00 which I thought was pretty good.

As for quality, well I checked the parallels and 123 blocks and they barely moved the needle on a 0.002mm indicator which is plenty good enough for me.
Here are a couple of catalogues:

    M&G Catalogue 1.pdf
    M&G Catalogue 2.pdf

Their Australian website is: M&G Productions Australia Pty Ltd

I’ve got no involvement in this business whatsoever but I really like the idea of having a reliable local supplier. I have put off the purchase of a lot of cheap tooling from the likes of CTC because I have no desire to be bent over on shipping (ok maybe when it comes to Eurotrash) and I want to have recourse if there is a problem. The idea of having a supplier who I can visit in person and discuss what it is I need is very appealing and if the price is also very reasonable then that supplier is going to get my business every time.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

    G'day Bob,
Parallels were $35.00, 123 blocks were $10.00 a pair and the eccentric clamps were $40.00 a set.
The 123 blocks aren't the ones with the non threaded holes clearance drilled but for that price I'm not going to complain. Unfortunately I neglected to check the T-nut size on the Mitee Bites and got a 16mm set so I haven't been able to try them out yet, I'll see if I can swap them when I pick up my next order. Speaking of which, I sent off a query to Felix last night and got a response to my questions within a couple of hours.

    Placed order this morning:

    1 x ER40 Collet Set with MT4 collet chuck.—AUD 130.00/set
    1 x ER40 1" straight shank collet chuck.--- AUD 30.00/pc
    5 x 250-101 quick change holders.--- AUD 15.00/pc
    2 x 250-102 quick change holders.---AUD 15.00/pc

Got a response within 15 minutes saying they will be added to his next shipment.

"I have informed my China company to arrange the shipment by air. We should receive them in 2 week. When they arrived at our warehouse I will contact with you."

No advance payment required so I'm a happy vegemite. I'll report on the quality when get them.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

A really top range of gear, hopefully the quality is a lot better than what normally comes out of China. Thanks Greg,

    Greg,

Thanks for sharing. May not be forthcoming or practical given their range, but I'd love a price list.

As a hobbyist a lot of my purchases happen if the price is right, or don't happen at all.

    G'day pippin,
You can always contact them and ask for a pricelist. Failing that put your wish list together and sent it in for a quote, that's all I did and the responce was pretty fast.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

I think the past few years there has been a change in retailers in Australia with regards to metalworking tools.

I seldom buy much from overseas these days.

Looks like he tries to make up for the cost of goods by jacking up the shipping costs.

Just a quick follow up on this, I got a call last week to advise that my order had arrived and found time on Monday to swing by and pick it up.

The AXA tool holders are pretty nice with the toolpost contact surfaces all nicely ground and a perfect fit. The clamp screws are high cheese alloy so I'll be replacing them but the holders themselves seem fairly hard. For $15.00 a pop I'm very happy with them.

The collet chucks are both quite nicely finished with ~0.01mm runout measured at the taper when in the lathe spindle or a collet in the mill so happy with them. The collets, while functional enough are a bit of a mixed bag finish wise. One is very nicely finished while the rest have a lot of sharp edges and a couple still had daggs from where the slits were cut. I checked the 16mm collet in the lathe and measured ~0.04mm runout on a slot drill shank, seems a bit ordinary to me but probably within my expectations given the price.

Unfortunately the Mitee Bites are only available for 16mm slots but there was no problem returning them so all good.
    Cheers,
    Greg.
