Quick Change Toolpost Which Is Better
HI ALL,
I would like to get a Quick Change Toolpost for My AL-960. I have been looking at the Hare & Forbes Website. I see H&F reccomend the Dickson Type Quick Change Toolpost for the AL-335 and the AL-960. However for the AL-336 they reccomend the Piston Type Quick Change Toolpost (I think its called a piston type ?). The AL-335 and AL-336 have the same Centre Height in the Specs. The AL-960 has a 2.5mm Increase in Centre Height as compared to the AL-335 and AL-336.
Is the Dickson Toolpost better than the Piston Type or visa versa ?. I have been looking at this Toolpost CDCO Machinery Corp. Item No. 29462 . I had thought about making one (I have a Mill Drill), but I would have to Buy Extra Tooling. Out of interest has anyone comes across any good Plans for a Quick Change Toolpost?.
Thanks in advance. All The Best steran50 Stewart

I've got one of the QCTP from CDCO but an AXA size as I have a smaller lathe. The only problem I've had is that some of the extra tool holders I've bought, also from CDCO, don't quite fit. Of the 12 tools holders I have, 1 is a very tight fit and one doesn't fit at all.
If you want to make your own QCTP, check out this site.Geoff

In theory, they are probably both good. I can't report on the piston type personally, but have both a genuine Dickson and an Indian made copy. I can't fault the Dickson, but the other one had an alarming failure while using the parting tool - the tool holder smashed like glass. Amazingly, the HSS parting bit survived unscathed. H&F Dickson copies look different, so maybe these are better.
For an easy to make toolpost that is quickly adjustable, the Norman/Drummond type has good reports.

HI,
I had forgotten about that Guy having one on his Website that He Made - Thanks snowyskiesau, He does Great Work. I printed off the Drawing to have a look at. I just found this Site http://www.chathamtool.com/buyplanstoolsonline.html with Plans of a QCTP on it. The Plans are quite Cheap, I am getting an Inkling to make my own. It is a shame about the problems with some of Your Holders. I imagine that they would be hardened so You wouldn't be able to do much to get them to fit.All The Best steran50 Stewart

I bought a QA150 tool post from H&F around 4 years ago and it has worked great with no complaints other than the price of extra holders. If you are thinking of buying one I would recommend them as they are a really nicely finished quality tool post.
I was not buying on the internet back then, if I had been I would have bought a wedge style one from the US and a heap of holders from CDCO for the same price.
I have read that 14 BXA holders will fit into a flat rate box, so thats around 185US posted. The wedge style is said to be better than the piston style from what I have read on a lot of forums, but there are a lot that have the piston and are happy with them.

HI ALL,
Thanks for the Replys Guys. I was keen on Making My own QCTP, but have Opted to Buy a Wedge Style one of 'Discount Machine Shop - SHARS' (discount_machine) on Ebay 10- 15" WEDGE QUICK CHANGE TOOL POST FOR ALORIS 222 BXA - eBay Toolholding, Metalworking Tooling, Manufacturing Metalworking, Business Industrial. (end time 18-Sep-10 06:57:40 AEST) . I figure by Buying this one I have a good chance of making My own Additional Holders than if had of Bought a Dickson as the Dickson Holders are more Complex. I like the Dickson, but it and any Additional Holders is like a Crocodile on the Hip Pocket (Hmm I just thought of a new saying 'Like a Crocodile on the Hip Pocket' . I was if anything keener on the Acme QCTP that Eskimo Posted than the Chatham Tool one.
Once I get it I will try and do a Thread of Fitting it to the Hafco AL-960B.
Thanks againAll The Best steran50 Stewart

Pipeclay, it is a BXA.
Stewart,
If you have any room in the flat rate box, I see he sells the extra holders for $16. Might be worth getting a few extra for now and making more latter.
Once you fit you will wonder how you did without it. That one is the one I would buy if I decided to ditch the Dickson one. I think the wedge ones are worth the extra because they pull the holder against the tool post instead of pushing it away and relying on only the dovetails.

HI,
Daves right it is an Aloris 222 BXA. The BXA is in the Items Title. As for the Postage No I didn't pay that much, there was 2 Postal Options when You click on 'see more services'. The first option was US$133.70 the second option was US$50.00 I opted for the US$50.00. The Total came to AU$226.54 . I was going to just get the Piston Type off them, but when I seen there was Postal Options i went for the Wedge Type instead.
I have already Paid for the Item so I will either make the other Holders when I need them or Buy them then. I intend to Buy more off them for example a Digital Quill Dro for My Mill Drill so I could get some more Holders then. All The Best steran50 Stewart

I suspect there's a lot of us AL960B owners that will follow your build very closely, for myself I've thought about a QCTP previously but always put it off - this may be the catalyst that gets me off my backside to add one. It will be interesting to see if the QCTP adds any flex into the tool setup or not.

Many QCTPs have a big overhang. The toolbit has "air" underneath it, often hanging over the side of the cross slide. Compare it to a 4 way toolpost that has metal under the toolbit, all the way down to the cross slide. It doesn't seem to cause many problems, but I guess at least in theory a QCTP isn't as rigid as other types.
