    Hi azzarock,
The design of the drawbar tool has been around for a long time, I made mine with long bush extension tubes as my operating handle is a fair way forward and down from the tool. The Diamond tool holder I made a couple of years ago and I like it and use it a lot, you do need good quality HSS bits for them, I use 10% Cobalt.

Neat idea and typically well executed Bob.

Can you still access the drawbar and use it manually in the case of a bit of late night milling. An impact driver and compressor would create some noise. How do you reverse the driver?

    BT,
That's what we call a butterfly gun. If you look in the second picture you'll see a pivoting plate with R and F. Push on one side forward, push on the other reverse. The Aluminum handle in the fourth picture pivots left/right to operate it.

    krisfarm,
Did you consider just letting the gun be driven by the spindle full time(except when the quill was down)?

The rattle gun does make a fair bit of noise operating, I am experimenting at the moment with it. I have put range limiting screws on both sides of the "butterfly" so that I can control the amount of air on both cycles independently.Apart from limiting the noise I wanted to control the rate that the drawbar is tightened,at the current setting it does up slowly and the noise is greatly reduced and it does not overtighten. There is an independent torque adjuster on the tool as well the compressor pressure. I found you need to undo at a higher rate to achieve enough rattle effect to loosen the tool. The top part of the tool including the rattle gun just lifts off the two stainless rods with no tools required for manual operation.

I do most of my milling with the quill locked in the up position and prefered not to have the rattle gun engaged as you would only be wearing it out and making more noise. My drawbar has around 25 mm of thread engagement into the tooling so if the drawbar was set up lower you would have to lift and hold up the entire assembly every time you change tools. To fit a new tool in I currently slip the tool in to the taper and engage the the two dogs at the same time ensuring the socket is engaged and hold it there and activate the rattle gun. Thanks for your interest.
