    Default Dainty little tangential

Made this dainty little tangential tool. Will make a pretty version as well because I want to learn how to finish things off nicely.

    6mm round toolsteel.

The workpiece is 14mm stainless steel and the tool cut it quite happily at 530rpm. The test piece was done freehand.

Copied the adjustment idea from an old magazine on Archive.org - the original used a dozen small steel balls to go around the corner but I used a wedge instead - it solves 2 issues - fine tool height adjustment and anti-hammerdown that sometimes affects diy tangential tools.

...... and of course copied the whole turnado idea from eccentric engineering ..... hope they don't mind ....... I think we are allowed to copy ideas for our own use as long as we dont try to sell them or pass them off as our own work.

Realised when I'd finished that I had a LH toolholder that could have done the job equally well - see photo.

    Eskimo,

Am keen to see where the idea evolved from and what else may have been done in the past....... any links you can post ?

Was wondering about other add ons that might be feasible ie would it be possible to mount a permanent thin bladed (modified hacksaw blade ?) back mounted parting tool and a freehand graving tool rest dont know if that would be practical or not.

One of my thin workpieces was a bit wobbly - was wondering about mounting a bearing in a delrin block on the table as a steady but then realised I could turn the table sideways get a shorter stickout and mount the steady rest on the ways just past the turnado table.

Am keen to have another go at chess pieces and was hoping this gadget would help with consistency.

I've got that system on my wood lathe (a Symtec), personally haven't really found it that great. Found it quicker to use proper turning chisels.

She Who Must Be Obeyed is finding it increasingly difficult to carry watering cans and bags of fertiliser etc. around the veggie gardens and rose gardens which frustrates her no end. A day out in the workshop with the plasma and TIG and the problem is solved...

She thought it might look nice painted red, I reckon I've managed that, it should come with sun-glasses.

    Happy wife - happy life.

No grandkids (yet), but a local dealer and I do make these Superkarts though, my part is the machining and welding. Current lap record holder at a number of tracks around Australia and a number of Australian championships to our credit. The photo is me at speed at Mallala.

That's a nice cart, and a nice kart!

I like the name of your racing team: "Olde Farte Racing"

Are you the record holder Gavin, or one of your karts? What motor are you running on your kart?

Sadly, not me. My best championship result was 2nd in 2011. These are a control engine class with the Rotax Max 125cc engine producing around 30 bhp. Good for 165-170 kph at Phillip Island. Everyone in this class runs the same engine and a control tyre to keep the costs in check.

If you have a lot of money to spend then you can race the 250cc International class with a 2 cylinder engine producing just shy of 100 bhp in a vehicle weighing around 220 kg (including driver). Then you are looking at around 250 kph top speed and lap times around the Moto GP mark.

I have an Arrow kart with a KT100S motor I bought for having some fun with the kids. 10 laps around Oakleigh go kart track and I was knackered. Would love to have a crack at PI, but I reckon the KT100 would explode before the end of the straight.

With this talk of speed I thought I`d post a couple of pic`s of a bike starter I am building for my brother.
(Actually I think its more for me, nothing worse than pushing a bike that wont start around the pits)
