Most people go with ER32's they go up to 20mm, you can also go with ER40's, they go up to 25mm. CTC tooling has good prices and everyone seems happy with them.

    Hi Eskimo, Dave,

Thanks for asking that question, I was about to ask the same thing.

What collet chuck comes with the HM52 standard accessories? ER32 maybe.

Also, another dumb question, what exactly is the difference between BT30 and NT30?

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi Ray,
The collet set that comes with them goes up to 16mm, H&F told me these collets are thrown in from the supplier and are unavailable separate. They will get you going, but the ER range are better collets.
The BT30 is meant to have a pull stud screwed into the top instead of a draw bar, they are for factory CNC machines. You can use them in a NT30 machine if you put a longer draw bar in. You will notice if you compare the 2 that the BT30 doesn't have the parallel section at the top of the taper.

We went over this subject a couple of months ago.. Get a full ER32 set from overseas...Do not go to ER40 as it is too big for an ISO30 spindle..

    Thanks Dave
I went round in circles on CDCO site looking but could only find NT40 chucks....why dont they stock NT30 stuff?

Anyway I have ordered ER40 collet in metric and NT30chuck ....am now thinking I should have ordered the inch collets as well

The problem with ER40 collets on an ISO30 spindle is the collets stick out too far from the spindle bearings...... My mill has an ISO30 spindle and came with an ER40 collet chuck and I do not like the way it performs... With an ER32 the collet sits up inside the spindle and thus is shorter and more rigid..

Of course though ER40 collets are great to use to make other attachments, like a collet chuck for the lathe and a simple dividing attachment for the mill...

There is no such thing as Imperial ER collets...I know they list them but ER collets each hold over a range of 1mm.. They are not like 5C collets that only hold the one size they are made for..

They are all a bit different but 15mm is 15mm..And it would make a difference for a mill that probably does not have precision bearings installed, like the cheaper ones (like my bridgeport clone)

All these mills like the HM52, bridgeport type are all floppy and not particuarly rigid machines... Realistically only suitable for 16mm endmills and smaller the ER40 is overkill for them, more suited for ISO40 spindles and larger..

I have ER32's but wish I had of bought ER40's to be able to hold 1inch and 25mm shank tooling. RC's ER40 chuck does look long, but I could still do with the holding capacity. H&F catalog does state 15mm longer but they have been found to be wrong plenty of times.
Here is the links to the CTC tooling ones.
    ER32 NT30 COLLET CHUCK #B59

    ER40 NT30 COLLET CHUCK #B60

It looks like they use the same picture for both

I run 20mm end mills in the HM52 when all the time, with no problems at all in steel.

But what depth of cut are you getting with the 20mm endmill??

My bridgeport can run 20mm endmills as well, but I cannot run a very deep cut..
