Default Where to buy Cable for 3 phase? - Melbourne

    Hi all,

Apologies, I am a certified electrical dunce. I want some flexible cable to nicely wire up a VFD a 1.5hp 3ph motor. I assume I need 4 core cable?. What size wire ? (I am not sure whether it is measured in diameter or area ... or either)

And lastly .. where to buy some? I went into a Middy's store and they have 5 core and up that was about 13mm or so thick and $9 a meter. They recommended some other specialist store that I'll not be able to get to. Bunnings doesn't.

Or just trust some ebay stuff?

    Greg.

It's measured in cross sectional area.
For a 1.5HP motor 1.5mm^2 should be OK.
For wiring between the motor and the VFD I would suggest using shielded cable and you can't get this from Bunnings and will need to go to a specialised Electrical suppliers.

    Something like this.

May be worth going to an industrial electrician's and seeing if they have an offcut that they will give/sell you.

1.5mm^2 4 core (3 and earth) black rubber sheathed cable. Any electrical wholesaler.

The rubber sheathed is more expensive than the orange stuff but it's generally tinned copper, more strands, more flexible and the sheath is more abrasion/abuse resistant. I won't use anything else for extension leads etc.

Otherwise plain single insulated in conduit works fine for a fixed installation.

    Hi Greg,

Try the electrical warehouse place next door to National Tiles in Mitcham (Maroondah hwy). If you are on the Western side then try Middy on McIntyre rd, Sunshine.

I purchased some Olflex Classic 110 from BNR Industrial Automation (BNR Industrial Automation - Premium Gear and Electrical Automation)

They did have a MOQ of 20M but it may just be on shipped orders.

This is the 3 core (black/numbered) + earth, transparent sheath with tinned copper braid, its more flexible than the generic stuff, costs a little more though.

All, thank you. Apologies for the late reply - time got away from me yesterday.

Taking your collective advice I went into A/H Electrical Wholesalers and also 'Go' as well. Neither had shielded of the sort mentioned above but A/H did have a 6meter offcut of flexible 4 core for the princely sum of $3 a meter.

Not orange or snazzy black rubber, but good old boring domestic cable looking grey. But, it is 4 core and 1.5mm so better than nothing I guess.

    Thanks again all.

    Greg.
