    Default Small HS Router Bits

Looking to get some bits for our Men's Shed router.
Cannot use anything smaller than 2 mm because of rigidity and speed limitations.

Any suggestions in the western suburbs of Sydney ?

    John,

If you expand the information on the HS bit you may get an answer.

The 2mm minimum referred to. Is it shank diameter or cutting head diameter?

Some indications on the intended application might trigger a response as well.

    Thanks Grahame for your comments.
It is obvious from the number of views that there is some interest in the subject title, but no suggestions on supply.
There are suppliers, most by postal delivery, a few by short(ish) car trips.
My question was to try and tease out suppliers used by members in the western suburbs.

    For the record:
    - 2 mm diameter and upwards cutting head,
    - shank any diameter to 1/4 inch,
    - speed is 12,000 RPM,
    - material is typically 1/8 inch MDF,
    - we are routing out shapes for push-together toys and table ornaments like dinosaurs.

A single Japanese bit from a quality industrial supplier can cost up to $25.
There is therefore a lot of incentive to seek out alternatives.

I can reccomend carbi-tool down here in melbourne, just because they are made here near me and nice guys but i don't know if they make them for such small shank diameters. Otherwise the regular aliexpress cbc retailers sell decent products generally, anything thats used in large quantities

I buy carbide bits from aliexpress.

Look for a seller who specialises in cutting bits and has good feedback.

    Hi,

With our ER11 collets I have notice the same puzzle, so am also interested.

At the moment I order these router bits off eBay, usually from China, in HSS and carbide, 3 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 1/4". One experiment I am going to try now is to shorten coated drills in 6 mm and resharpen them to make centre cut end mills. The angles could be unsuited though. Should be interesting.

Have you thought of trying dental burs for the small sizes? I have not tried them myself, but my dentist did give me a couple of new carbide ones about 2 mm to try some time ago. I put them in a very safe place - so safe that even I can't find them. I know they come in a big variety of shapes and sizes, and I doubt they would be anything like $25 each. If so, it is no wonder dentists don't come cheap!

Many years ago a family dentist gave my father a handful of assorted used HSS ones complete with blood stains and adhering pulp, which he found very useful for all sorts of unlikely purposes. The same dentist was a very competent modeller of boats, and used dental tools extensively in detailing his models.
