Gst
Might need to find a mate in the USA so as to avoid GST.
email this morning from Shipito:
Hi Richard N,
Beginning July 1, 2018, Shipito is required by the Australian government to collect a 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on all “low value goods” imported into Australia, with a value of 1,000 AUD or less. GST is calculated based on the value of any items you ship, plus our service charges. As a result, you will now see a charge for GST at mailout.
If you use Shipito for business purposes and wish to submit the GST with your regular tax payments:
1) Visit your Account Preferences page
2) Click “Edit” under each Shipping and Billing address listed
3) Enter your ABN number(s) in the “Tax ID” field(s)
Please visit our FAQ page or contact customer support at [email protected] with any questions.
Kind Regards,
The Shipito Team

looks like all my online purchases will be coming to Australia via a short stopover in South Korea from now on, and where possible I'll be avoiding members of the Australian retail association like the plague

I should be alright, they'll be arriving at customs as a "gift parcel" and items will have original packaging removed.
I doubt there's much they can do about it at that point, but you never know..

It is not the 10% GST that bothers me so much. It is that I cannot locally buy certain items connected with my sport because they are too low volume for Aussie retailers to bother with.
I cannot see small to medium overseas companies who currently supply those niche items I need from time to step up and become tax collectors for another country.
Bigger companies maybe, but the smaller companies are going to consign that one to the too hard basket.
The Government wants the GST dollar but is not willing to set up an Australian based mechanism to collect it.

My most recent purchase from Hong Kong through ebay and paid using PayPal was for $2.72. My linked visa card statement had that amount followed by a transaction for $0.27. The Government must really want that gst revenue. It probably cost more than that in processing the transaction.

I have also bought form overseas on EBAY and Ebay has collected the GST. But they haven't given me a tax invoice, pretty sure that is a requirement if they are collecting gst. I also wonder if i buy from a overseas private seller will i be charged GST.

Yes they are collecting.
I used ebay the other day for an $18 OS purchase and noted the following
When I read my ebay receipt it said $18 for the said purchase and a second completely separate payment of $1.80 to another PayPal customer which is "eBay Australia & New Zealand Pty Limited" - no mention of GST anywhere.
To see the latter transaction details I had to go into my PayPal account and only there does it show a separate payment for something called a GST paid to ebay Australia?
BUT
It does not link the GST payment it to any other transaction record, my name and any other ID like an address is not on that transaction and it even says - no shipping address provided - for the GST payment I suppose.
So I have not paid GST to the ATO, all I have done is paid Ebay/Aust a 10% surcharge - and I assume it goes to the ATO.
So if I get called up by the ATO about it (which I really doubt but suppose I do), i have no real proof I paid any GST to teh ATO for this item - I just paid something to Ebay/Aust called GST on for about the same time I bought something worth 10 x the item marked in my records as GST. Maybe that's all they require.
Now I am not paranoid enough to lose sleep over the possibility that the ATO are going to chase me up about this or anyone else either. This smells exactly like I suspected they are just picking off the big player suppliers for minimal effort. Their policing of this as far as customers go is starting to smell of bovine excrement to zero proportions. Its like they're fishing for GST with a net full of big holes. I guess they don't have much choice but all it will do is foster the development of smaller tax avoiding fish.
