    Default Members Locations

Would it be possible for the new and existing members to change their Location from say Australia or their State to City/Suburb/Town and the State? Reason for asking the state, is that some suburbs names are also in other states.
Most of the members on here are generous with their time, knowledge and offer of help but cannot always do it because the OP has no location listed, so its back to ask another question, yet again and add another day or more to the response. I don't feel that this is an invasion of privacy as all you are giving out is a basic area where you live.

If you'd like to know how to go about making/repairing a certain article, a photo, sketch or drawing is better than a thousand words, it doesn't have to be draughtsman quality, take a photo and download it, is what I do, as I don't know how to scan pics etc.

The same with equipment, if a member asks for advise on how to do something, could they please list the major machines that are available to them. Maybe this part could go in their profile, just a thought.

I've also noticed that a lot of replies to threads have "reply with quote" even though the thread they are replying to is immediatley above. We have been asked not to do this as it makes thread unneccesarily long.
Anyone else have similar comments to make this fantastic Forum even better?

    I agree with Kyrn

Many of you, join the forum to get assistance with a metal work-related problem. That is fine, as there are a core group of members here that consistently perform over and above in helping their fellow hobbyist metalworkers.

Most of the time, the help, takes the form of online advice and that is straightforward.

At other times, the assistance can be with more tangible items such as materials, consumables, spare parts, a demonstration of technique/procedure and use of particular machinery or tools that the poster does not have available.

Personally, I can say quite a number of times, I have been helped out by fellow members in one way or another.

One of the aspects that most influences members decision to assist is the location of the member they decide to help.

Many times we see a members location listed as just Australia. As soon as I see that I am less inclined to help. Why? I may have what that poster needs, but my inclination to help just fades as I don't know if they are one suburb away or live on the other side of the continent.

It is not only me. It has been discussed with other members at times and I think most will agree.

OK! I understand that a few may not want their location listed as it may pinpoint their location to someone that does not have their best interests at heart. I am thinking of small towns here.

So, guys, town or suburb and state can really help those who want to help you. It is not hard at all, to go in a change those details.

Hopefully we can kick it around for a while and see what we can come up with?

Agree 100%. I doubt this is always done by new members deliberately, so persuading or reminding new registrants about this at time of registration is perhaps needed

Perhaps even a mandatory postcode (ie cannot register without) would be useful.
If folks don't want to put their real post code they can always put another.

In addition or as an alternative - where the location is requested on the registration page, perhaps including a note saying something like
"Your specific location (other than your country) may be useful to you when you request help from other members"
