Outside caliper
I'm looking for one of these for occasional use.
Caliper.jpg
(this one from the US would be A$360 by the time it got here - more than I think they are worth)
Basically, I want to measure some wall sections (think casting or injection moulding) but they may have a thicker section between where I'm interested and the edge I can access from. Ideally I'd like a 6" throat depth, although realistically 4" would probably do. The items may have some form to them so a flat jaw on one side would probably get in the way.
Plan B would be to make one but it's a lot of work for something just to check the wall thickness of other things I'm making.

Michael, because it will be used only occasionally, could you make a pair of "jaws" that could clip onto a vernier caliper? Even if you were to buy a cheapish vernier for the exercise and make it a little more perminent......just thinking out loud
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

Woodturners use similar calipers maybe check them out, depending on the accuracy your after.
Body fat calipers might also work, check out some of the ones available on ebay etc....

Jaws could be an answer but I don't really like them much because if not properly attached they can slip. The range of measurement I'm after is only something like 0 to say 15mm, so a dial indicator seemed the logical thing
Body fat calipers that I've seen have the range but typical the throat depth is only 25mm or so and I'm after 100mm or more. The wood turning calipers I saw on Carbatec's site had a flat on one side and still required something to make the measurement. If you have seen some that are curved both sides, have a 100mm or so throat depth and are self contained, please post a link for me.

Scaling from the pictures in the ad, it looks like the throat depth is only around 70mm.

What would be involved in dismantling a digital caliper and silver soldering a set of jaws on it???
Just thinking outside the box or is it inside the box????
