I'm looking for a 1Hp 3-phase 4-pole (~1440rpm) motor. It needs to be a relatively recent one (later than 1950s) as I need to fit it in the space of a 3/4HP single phase one.
    Anyone got one collecting dust?
Oh, and I don't want to spend lots of money

PS: it's going into my Douglas shaper - it started off 3-phase and I stupidly converted it to single phase. I learnt that single phase motors don't like being overloaded rythmically (on the cutting stroke) for long periods of time.....

How could you overload a Douglas shaper? They don't have the mass or rigidity to cut the skin off of a cold rice pudding really.

I'd suggest just buying a new WEG motor - probably about $120. I think that's about what I paid for the one I fitted to the cylindrical grinder.

Well, I use my Douglas shaper a lot and it cuts a fair bit of metal just fine. Don;t underestimate the little shaper!
It's motor gets overloaded on long cuts - over 8" long - and the limit is really the 3/4Hp motor.
Anyway, what happens is that the motor gets slowed down enough towards the end of the stroke, because it doesn't have the mass, as PDW says, to provide enough inertia in the ram or the bull wheel. So the motor has to drive the ram. When it slows down, my motor switched back to the starting windings on each stroke. Took me a while to figure out what was going on, because the motor on mine is inside the base and not visible. I saved the motor from harm once I realised, but I really want to replace it with a slightly bigger one and one without a starting winding and centrifugal switch.
Oh, and I have a 1Hp vector VFD to make it work.
And yes, a new one is on the cards if nobody has a spare they want to sell....

Have you tried adding a flywheel directly to the motor?
That could be less trouble than fitting a new motor, and could give the system enough inertia to carry through for a few more seconds with less speed reduction. I know the Douglas has a large cast iron sheave on the first speed reduction but rpm is your friend when it comes to energy stored by flywheels, and the large sheave apparently runs too slowly to store enough energy.

    Joe,

    Would a metric AP80 frame 0.75KW / 1HP 415V star 3phase motor fit?

I have one sitting under a bench available for free.

    Hi Andrew,
yes it would fit. But hold that thought for now. I think I found one I can pick up on Monday. The owner doesn't know if it works. I'll soon find out
If it's cactus, I'll contact you.
I think the mission is solved.

I suppose we should start a 'register' of spare motors people have under the bench.... I have a passed on a quite a few over the years too....

Picked up the motor mentioned above today. Sadly it is a 1 HP DELTA 415V.... So no go with rewiring to 240V.
I've contacted Andrew re his offer of a star 415V motor.
So this motor is now spare to my requirements and available free to anyone who needs it.
    Cheers, Joe
