Hi all,

I am doing first pass restos on a 1941 South Bend 10" lathe, a 40s (I think) Alba shaper, and an old (manufacturer unknown) mill all at the same time and each is used to help restore the others as I learn about restoring machinery. Adding a surface grinder capable of 300-500mm to that would be incredibly useful. When all these tools are happy then I plan to do another deeper round that involves scraping and alignment. See my other posts on this forum trying to get numbers together for a scraping course in Melbourne.

I have been keeping my eye out for a nice old surface grinder in need to some deep lovin' TLC. I don't have all that much room in the shed so a vertical aspect (taller than it is wide) is best. Nice cast iron base. I love these old girls and their cast curves so vintage character is important. I am crap at electrics so things actually working is good but not required. I have a leaning to the war years so pre/during/post WWII era is ideal. And helps with the wife - who is a WWII history fanatic. ) ... but it ain't that important.

Stored at the back of the shed under a tree is okay as long it isn't too far gone. The born-again mill sat waiting to die in the dust on a farm near Echuca and she now is back to making stuff.

I am happy to travel interstate from sunny Melbourne for the right old lady - eg the Alba shaper came from Newcastle. Budget is not sheep-station size so if you're happy to pass on your pride-and-joy (or under-junk annoyance) to someone who thinks these ladies should live longer than we do for less than a kings ransom, ping me back here or PM me.

She'll go to a good home, and she'll outlive us. )

Greg.

PS. And worth mentioning my trailer has a 700kg limit, but if it can be partly disassembled then some of it can go in the back of the prado.
