Wanted: Milling Machine
G'day guys,
i am currently in the market for a small milling machine in the sydney area. Preferably single phase but i could use a 3 phase unit with a vfd. Looking for something slightly better than the round post mills that H&F sell. Any leads would be greatly appriciated.
Shane.

Do you have a particular work size envelope in mind? What sort of Dollars are you prepared to go to, Shane? With/out tooling, type of tooling? No point in telling you about a $4000 one, when you want to spend $500? Answering these, would get you a machine closer to your requirements.

Fair Comment Kryn,
My budget is around $1000, ideally i would like some basic tooling but not a deal killer.

Hi Shane,
For that sort of money, this is about all you'll get, Mini Milling Drilling Machine in NSW | eBay. Another one requiring all the electrics, Mini MILL Hafco HM10 in NSW | eBay, set it up with a small 3ph and Inverter could be a good machine.
Very small work surface, it's OK if you want it for model making. I had one till my brother wanted it back, I couldn't get it into the boot of the car quick enough.
The gears are plastic, metal ones are available, but they broke also. Tramming them is no problem, keeping it in tram is another, without a bit of fabrication work, can load pics of what was done, if needed. For something half decent with out it being clapped out, I try to save another $1k, Ebay has them running from $1500 minimum upwards. The other thing I forgot to ask was did you want a vertical or horizontal mill as there is a lot of difference in the capability of the machines. To set up a decent mill with tooling could be another $1k, depending on the type of tooling, a decent machine vice $350 used, NT30 tooling arbor probably $75.00 each and on it goes. I know, I've been looking for something better than the "TOY" mill.
Hope this helps a bit, sorry to be a bit of a downer, but thought I'd let you know. Don't get me wrong, if it was for a model making mill, it would be acceptable, but without knowing what you are wanting to do on it, making it difficult to answer. Thanks for the update, very nice indeed. What make is it and where did you acquire it from? Interested, as it's in my price range for a present to myself next year.
