Titanium Bolt-action Pens
I just finished a batch of titanium pens as gifts for family and friends.
Materials:
- 10mm OD x 8mm ID Ti tube for the barrels.
- Solid Ti rod for the "bolts", screws and tail caps.
- Damasteel "Parallel Layers" pattern stainless-steel Damascus for the tips.
- Parker G2 refill
The barrels were wet sanded to 800 grit then anodised at 29V. With Ti anodising the voltage determines the colour. 29V= blue.
The Damasteel tips were sanded to 2000 grit then etched in 12% sulphuric acid for 15 minutes. I initially tried hydrochloric acid, but I found the sulphuric gave a better contrast between the two alloys.Chris

Nice work Chris. I've never seen anyone do these from scratch like that. Very nice.
If you don't mind, can you tell me more about your dividing device, or point me to where you have already.
...and your milling spindle - tell me more please - I own a 260 too.
Cheers

Wow they are amazing. A pen is not just a pen when you receive one of those as a gift!
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

Nice work Chris, and that Damasteel sure looks nice.
A bit of a redesign and a 22 would slide in there nicely

More Pens
I made three more pens for the girls. Same design as the last lot, but with zirconium plungers. The Zr is heated to red hot and a black oxide layer forms. Apparently the oxide is as hard a sapphire, so hopefully it wont scratch from use. I polished the bore of the titanium barrel to minimise the chance of scratching the oxide. The barrels were anodised at 75V DC in a bicarb-soda solution.
The photos reveal some scratches in the Damasteel tips that weren't visible to the naked eye. I'm sure the recipients won't mind.Chris
