Thanks for the offer. I have some longer slings but decided not to use them. That's two slings in use in the photo, one at each end. It seemed pretty stable when I lifted the plate. They didn't show any sign of wanting to creep into the middle, if so I would have put a spreader in-between them.

Before lifting I did ask myself what would I do with 2 halfs of a broken surface plate?!

Since my last post i decided to make some changes to the stand. I could never be 100% happy with a stand that shows bubble movement when leaning on it.

So i made some changes. The stand now has 3 adjustment feet and 3 points of contact on the ground. These are directly below the 3 bessel points that support the plate.

First off i ground off the 3 mounting points where the plate would sit.

These mountings where left attached to the 10mm plate but i turned them down with a rebate to fit into some 60x5mm pipe.

I then cut 3 x 60mm holes through the 75x75 rhs and fitted 2 sopports to the bottom of the stand with the same 60mm holes cut through.

I also made new support brakets with the same rebate at the other end of these pipes to holes the thread for the adjustment feet.

The 4 corners that were previously the feet will now be adjusted (yet to be made) to be just shy of touching the floor and act as anti-tipping feet in the event the plate is loaded poorely to one side.

All in all it was a bit of extra work to a project that was deemed nearly finished. However i am now satisfied that any bubble movement is from the slab and not from my stand.

A coat of paint and some draws will finish this stand.

    Cheers.

    Simon

G/day simon, I reckon you need to piff those wheels and replace them with something metal and a bit more serious to match that beast of a frame

Yea thanks shed....... for shameing my wheels!

Those wheels were parts of a frame that my pacific mill came on. The previous owner had it on a frame with 8 of those wheels so he could move it around. I hate heavy machines on wheels, I like them to be rock solid. If I need to move them then it's another issue. Anyway, if 8 of those wheels can hold 1200kg then 4 can hold the 350kg of the plate and frame!

You know as rigid as that frame looks and it's improved design, I can still get a full bubble increment of movement when I sit on one edge of the plate! I'm not sure if it's still coming from the frame (somewhere) or it's just the slab movement under the feet. I guess in reality it's a movement of 2 um over the length of the surface plate so it's not big. Before the "improvements" in the design I could get it to move the whole length of the vial.

When I finish painting the frame I'm going to attempt to "map" out the level of the surface plate using the level and placing it at 10cm increments along the plate and in line with the calibration lines on the test certificate. I'm not expecting a NATA certified result but i'm keen to see what I can see from the bubble movement at different points on the plate. It may be something to do closer to winter, when the temp variations are not as big. I have noticed that if I leave the level on the plate over the period of a day, the bubble moves through different positions throughout the day.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the write up of your stand, Simon. If you're wanting to set the plate so there's very little variation, you might need to look at a small temerature controlled room for it.

Yea. I had considered bringing it into our living room but the wife had other ideas!

Seriously though yea I know you're taking the p1ss and rightfully so because at the end of the day it's in a shed that has huge temp variations. It's not a metrology lab and I'm just a home hack.

In truth I was just a little disappointed at my first design and was hoping for a more rigid setup. I guess it's like anything I build, I doesn't have to be the best but it does have to be the best that I can do otherwise I disappoint myself.

Now I have to build draws for it. That's another challenge because while I spend much time metalworking, my wood working skills are not the best! I really appreciate working with wood and find it very rewarding but to be good at both means spreading myself too thin!

It's called the Industrial Look, apparently VERY vogue.

Actually, a surface plate would make a cool coffee table!
