    Default tap wrench

I asked about making one of these sometime back...thought it was time that I got off my backside and did something about it

I am happy with the way it turned out.
MrPete222 tip 393 video helped me out the calcs for milling the slot...worked a treat

    Hi Eskimo,

Very nicely done ! I've not seen one made quite like that.
I do agree with Simon, the knurling looks really good, a nice sharp pattern.

    Lovely work.

    What material did you use?

I really need to consider making one, or buying a decent wrench. I've broken and cracked the cheap crappy ones I've had and they hold terribly and are made from cheese.

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

Handles were BMS but the jaws was from stuff a mate gave from his toolmaking days a few years ago...so I am guessing/hoping it might be good stuff so I can harden them?

Yes you can see the end mill marks...but I intend to harden and grit blast and parkerise...so hopefully they should disappear....with a bit of luck

    Hi Eskimo,

Looks good ! Should be even nicer when you have treated it.

I have a Starret one, its many years old. I keep meaning to remove the screw and put a hardened tip on it. Mine has mushroomed badly and will need to be filed to get the screw out. Another round toit I'm afraid, its somewhere in there

    Hi Eskimo,

Yes I really ought to pull it out of its hiding place and do something like that. I do think that its a weakness of this type of tap wrench. I used to have one that came in a box of taps & dies, the screw handle was made from monkey metal and broke off the first time I used it. I sawed it in half to release the tap before throwing it in the scrap bin.

I currently use a similar one with a sliding "V" block.

wonder what the plungers cost?..wondering if I should buy one in lieu of making one...If I buy I wont have to harden it

would silver steel be okay to make the plunger and harden and temper afterwards?

edit: they are US$6.22 each for this size...but will it fit?...as I have no idea if I am any where close to their dimensions..I just took a good picture form the web and expanded its size till it was about 9 inches in length...what I got is what I have shown.
