Advice to make circular metal trim
Hi there. It’s my first post. I’m wondering if anyone has any advise on how I can make a circular piece of metal trim. It’s for decorative purposes for an art piece. It would run around a circular piece of steel about 25” in diameter. The steel is 2mm thick. I want to use either brass or bronze maybe copper. Basically the ring would be about 1cm wide and be permantly clamped or crimped around the steel in the center. Ideally the trim would be gutter shaped so it’s fits nicely around the edge. Is there a machine that could roll out that shape? Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to a Top Forum. Could you please change your location for East, to a town or Suburb and State, PLEASE?
It makes it easier to help you when and if you need an item or need a hand.
From what I can gather, you're wanting to make a U shaped channel ring 25" diameter out of brass or copper?
Is this shape going to be an ongoing item or a one off? A machine to do that isn't gong to cheap!!
What I'd do is make a former out of MDF or similar, the same size as what it's going to fit on. Cut another ring the same size, this will be the piece to clamp the covering sheet in place.
Cut your sheet of copper/brass over size, about 3-4mm each side, place it on top of the former, clamp the top ring in place with lots of clamps.
The sheeting I pressume, will only be very thin .25mm or so. It should then be a simple matter of using a piece of hardwood dowelling to roll the edges over the former, a little at a time.
Hope this helps.

Hi there,
Welcome to the forum.
You don't mention what tools you have ! But if you have a lathe then you could make a ring roller. Then feed it with brass or copper strip and it will form your circle and if you use shaped rollers form the "C" channel shape. For a one off you could also use hardwood for the rollers.Best Regards:

I simple drawing of the profile and how it relates to the circle would help, BaronJs instructions will work if the hollow area is on the inner wall, but if you want one of the side walls as the hollow of the C like for a top cap that's very different and much harder.

A drawing would help.
How about some 10mm tube slit 2mm then rolled around.
Maybe roll it first then slit.

Hi Swinginhammers,
First up, welcome to our forum.
Our blokes will try to help. You have made a good start as many new blokes post way too little info to enable practical answers.
Given you are in the US, do you realise we are an Aussie forum.
It helps us to know that when we try to answer problems. We don't have the specialist shops and available tools and services like you fellas do.
It struck me that your Harbour Freight ( nope! we don't have that either) may have a reasonably priced manually operated rolling tool to do what you want.
For the life of me, I can't think of what the tool is called. I have seen the hot rod blokes use them to roll straight and circular profiles in sheet metal, so it might work.
I will have a look and see if I can hunt it up on the net.
I'll be back

Hi Micahel
This was what I was thinking of.
Bead rollers. You can buy them manually operated or they can be power fed.
Metal Fabrication Equipment - Bead Roller - Metal Forming Tools @PPCCO online shop
There a big range of dies for them. Not super cheap but not dear for what they are.
I THOUGHT IT WAS HF BUT I WAS WRONG!
Eastwood seem to be the place for automotive sheet (think thin gauge) tools.

The shrinkers AFAIK will form a single flange but not both sides.
From what I understand of our new member's requirements he needs a gutter profile -basically U shaped that can slip over the 2mm thick steel.
He does not say how wide <[B] EDIT, yes he does! - 10mm> the 2mm thick steel is though.
With the right shaped dies it should do the job.
