    Duh!!!!
Back to the drawing board...must do more research before I attempt these things...

when I made what you see in the pictures above aint going to work...the cross slide wont make lathe centre...lol

    Options
Make new base to fit existing top slide bolts , but that will mean having to dismantle the ball turner every time to fit and remove

Make a plate that uses existing top slide bolt holes but make it a tad longet so that ball turner can be fitted closer to centre...but then size of balls reduces

Drill and tap holes 2 new holes into rear of cross slide to accept what I have made to date.

    any others?

    what would you do?

I was going to suggest that it would be an opportune time to make a new and slightly longer cross feed screw, then i notice your y scale.
I guess a new base might be easiest, if the rear mounting bolt is at or past centre can you incorporate your centre pivot bolt
    as a mounting bolt?
    cheers, shed

the big problem with making a new base that will use the existing bolts means having to dismantle the turner every time to fit. The ball turner has a tapered roller bearing within it and would be a pita

The plate I made as seen under base works but lessens the dia of ball that can be turned. It also allows it to use the existing top slide nuts but without having to pull the turner apart.

Hence why I thought of making two new holes at rear of cross slide would be the go.

I might just forget about it and find another project until I think of a bloody good idea....or better yet until someone else thinks of excellent idea

Is there a reason that the part with the bearing is round?
Would it be possible to machine off back, the thickness of the plate and bolt it back onto the plate with CS screws?
Failing that, machine down the area where the bearing goes, the thickness of the plate?

Thought of doing that but I would have 2 holes that I know should not be there. Wont be able to recountersink those holes which are for recessed socket head round screws. Could try to machine them out I suppose??? And then drill 2 new holes and countersink...then take some off back???
Ta Kryn...will have a look at that toomorrow.

is there any problem with putting to 2 holes in cross slide. After all there are two at rear which are 8mm and used for taper turning attachment...so the manual says...and no i wont be able to use those ....looked at that possibilty.

If you're that concerned about the holes, slightly countersink them, fit a bit of rod in the holes then peen them over, and file/machine flush. Problem solvered.

    Hi there,

I made the same or similar ball turner a few years ago. Ill show you some pics of mine when i get home.

I used the bolts on the cross slide (where the compound goes) but i didnt use another plate. My lathe is a standard Chinese 12x36.

Using those mounts on my AL960 wont allow it to get to centre...thats why I need an extension plate or new holes in cross slide or new base and or as what else Kryn is saying...

and I notice that no one is telling me I cant put 2 new threaded 8mm holes in the cross slide...but then again you aint telling me I can

Hi there. No one will tell you its ok to drill holes in your top slide just as no one told me it will be ok to disassemble my mill spindle!

But i did and it was ok. People are reluctant to give you the ok to do stuff like this because they worry it might end up being bad and stuffing up your expensive machinery (righfully so). Sometimes you just need to weigh it up for yourself and decide whether to take the plunge or not. I dare say 2 extra holes in your top slide will not have a huge impact BUT think twice and cut once. If im unsure about something like this then it sit on it for a bit..... sometimes for too long. I tend to procrastinate with things im scared ill stuff up. If i dont do anything then i havent made a mistake.... but thats a bad approach and ultimately i dont learn that way.

Anyway. Heres a pic of mine. With mine on the cross slide using compound bolts im able to get it in line with the lathe axis so dont have the smae issues.

I also opted for a HSS cutter as that also gives me some flexibility that a fixed tc indexed cutter cant. I was going to make another tool post that hols an indexable cutter but am yet to find a need.

Good luck with what you decide!

    Simon

    Tks Simon
If I use the nut for the cross slide as one of the fastening points I would only have to drill and tap one extra hole.
I could possibly use one of the rear holes (used for taper cutting attachment) but it would mean i would have to remove the slide to drill n tap the hole as it be above the ground surface of the way. And i dont want that. To use the rear hole and drill n tap another closer to centre away from way would mean that turner wont be sitting symetrically....if thats the word....on the slide and wont like good

With the cross slide at full extension, how far away is the pivot point of the ball turner from the spindld axis?
