Unfortunately, it's like a lot of things now days, stuff costs money to sit on the shelf. If it doesn't turn over every month, it goes back or if it eventualy sells, it's not replaced.
I've been helping a mate out building a few trailers, galvanised floor sheets, you'd think they'd be the same all the time. Nope, different finishes, different sizes, even though they're purchased at the same time too! One lot has the normal galv type flaky look about it, another dead flat finish, no flaky look, nothing.

    Lessons learned...

On thursday, the partner in crime got a phonecall from the local bearing and seal shop, who invited us down to have a meeting with "someone" from SKF. Turns out someone was a state manager of some description, travelling with a sales rep and doing...sales reppy things. I was keen, to say the least, to ask why the hell something in a catalogue isnt obtainable!

The short of it is that the catalogue is a worldwide item, and somewhere, amongst SKF's thousands of warehouses, stores and chains of supply is the seals we want. However, it gets to the point where it becomes economically unviable to find them and have them make their way to my hot little hands. At that point, they resort to their plan B, which is to machine the seals up from like materials, and supply them. My friend had passed on that I was somewhat concerned about the materials aspect of it (and I am) and so mr manager hops on the blower and rings up an engineer. He has a yarn to him, makes it quite clear that we're to be looked after, then hands the phone to me. Engineery mate on the other end answers my questions very satisfactorily. We're being sorted out with a quote and if the quote hurts like the end of a teenage romance, mr manager is going to sort that right out for us.

Honestly - buy SKF. Maybe we got the run around with retail level people, but when you stop talking to the wrong end of the horse, you get really looked after. We're gunna get two sets of seals for this press, one for a rainy day. That said, this is possibly just the beginning, offsider and I are discussing the possibility of doing a limited production run of these things. Given the market price and our costs, there appears to be a good bit of margin in the product. But thats a discussion for another day, and it will definitely use readily available SKF seals.

Couldnt speak highly enough for SKF though. Really good service.

Mate. When you design something around what you believe are off the shelf items in a catalog and then find out they are as rare as hens teeth, that's disappointing to say the least. Good on the guys from SKF to make things right. Happy that it all looks like it will turn out positive.

    Nice work BTW.

Yea plenty of stuff in catalogues that is not available.

I am currently in the process of making a 2 1/2" bore steering cylinder for a tractor. I went to a thief guild, sorry I mean hydraulic supplier and am getting seals through them as they got in what is off the shelf items. I also priced some 45 degree adapters from them. $27 each. Then I rage a Gold coast shop who has an ebay store. their price $9 each. The thief guild had OK prices for the seals and tube/chromed bar though.

Awesome project, thanks for writing about it.
You wouldn't happen to have a photo of the finished project?

    Cheers
