Grinding Slot in Wood Lathe Tool
My local men's shed has a number of wood lathes using many typical HSS tools.
The photo shows one tool currently in use.
Shaft is marked "HSS", 10 mm diameter.
The slot appears to be about 3 mm deep and 7.2 mm wide at the edges.
My observation of wood turners in operation tells me the cutting is performed by the edge of the slot, so slot shape is critical.
The request has been made that I try to extend the ground slot in the shaft.
Not sure why, but I love a challenge !
And I need to practice surface grinding skills.
I have a 1/8" and a 1/4" genuine Australian Norton wheels, 120 grit.
No problem purchasing additional wheels, as needed.
My magnetic chuck is good, and I have a couple of transfer V-blocks.
Coolant will be used.
What I need is some mentoring on how to go about this job.
No problem making special tooling/jigs etc, this is is not a time-critical job.
My notional plan is to acquire a 36 grit wheel, shape to appropriate width with an appropriate radius and make the majority of the slot.
Then re-shape my existing 1/4" 120 grit wheel with correct radius to get the slot edges correct, one at a time.
Should I remove the handle as step 1 ?
How do I dress the wheel to get the radius ?
Can I rely on the transfer V-blocks to hold the part ?
If I acquire a couple of precision machinist vises, would they hold the part on the chuck ?
Should I fence the part against movement, or rely only on the vises on the chuck ?
( a fence might allow a monumental blow-up should the table over-travel )
Thanks for any comments or advice,

Thats a 3/8 detail gouge with a fingernail grind, if the handle has been put on properly you'll have fun trying to get it off.
I'd say remove the ferule, clamp it in the vice and try and loosen it with a wobble then use a bit of hardwood as a drift to get it off.
Dunno why they want it ground back more thats got plenty of life left in it?....................................................................
