More apologies Dave. I'll put a reminder on my phone.

On the large tandem compound engine that drives the battery to crush the quartz (built by the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat), the starting valve/throttle valve has become almost impossible to turn and constantly leaks past the gland.
Time for a new spindle, which means I get to use the TOS cylindrical grinder ( most likely a big part of why the engine is getting a new spindle)

Good thing you had the TOS there to make that spindle otherwise that valve would still be leaking!

For those of us who don't normally work with packed valves, is there a trick to how tight packing valves are done up or is it just until things don't leak?

    Default What a job.

I feel sorry for you Phil having to play with dirty lathes and cylindrical grinders, pulling old stuff apart and making it new again.

I hope the "Hill" supplies you with Solvol.

Reckon you need a real job like an accountant or dress maker. Could you imagine?

ps, great job of machining, when's the next "Hill" guided tour?

    Hi Michael
gland packing sometimes falls into the 'dark art' category. Normally they are done up until they stop leaking but there are many times where they should leak a bit to ensure some lubrication is happening.
Most of the work is done when packing and not when tightening. The Phoenix valve spindle is the result of no work done while packing the stuffing box and relentless tightening because it wont stop leaking.
Each ring has to be compressed to work efficiently but this is not always possible due to the gland not being long enough to reach the first several rings and it is only coming into contact after the stuffing box has been packed with two or three or more rings.
I make up tamping sticks to tamp the initial rings of packing until the gland can start compressing this way I know each ring is standing a better chance of doing its job individually.
I put the joins opposite each other when packing which over the years have found to be quite successful.
I have come across valves where the last guy has spiral wound the packing which puts me in the 'I want to kill you mode'. Very bad practise. I understand it is accepted practise when using packing under 3/16".
If each ring is individually compressed to start with then it is just a simple matter of tightening while operating the spindle you are trying to seal until it ceases to leak or leak the required amount.

    Hi Ken
being an accountant would be great... Bahahaha
Not saying there is anything wrong with being an accountant, I just doubt it would be my calling. I've had dirty hands my entire life and I aint gunna change now.
I should organise another 'tour of the hill' for the 'National Machine Tool Restorers Association'. Anyone interested?

    Hi Phil,

Put me on top of the list for the next tour, next summer.

Don't like the bitter cold, renown for Ballarat.

I'd be interested if the timing is right, I know 3 others including a Blacksmith & one of Puffing Billy's former Maintenance Engineer's that would probably be interested also.

The "boss" and I will be passing through Ballarat mid August on the way to race at Phillip Island, if the dates coincide I'd be a starter.

    Hi Phil,
Nice machining /grinding on the spindle, how did you get on when you did not have the grinder? I noticed that you are using your Diamond Tool in one shot, I recently brought a Crobalt tool bit from Exccentric Engineering and am very impressed with its preformance, especially compared to the low grade HSS bits I have. Do you have Crobalt in that holder? Really enjoy your captions in the photos ae well.
    Regards Bob
