1928 Linn logging tractor
At the Laidley Pioneer Village in SE Qld resides this 1928 Linn logging tractor, they were made in New York state. Its a magnificent machine, 6 cylinder Waukesha engine, transmission brake only, 3 speed, no creature comforts. The engine is very torquey, if you take your foot off the clutch in top gear at idle the 5 ton Linn just trundles away without hesitation.
Top speed is 7 mph which nowadays seems slow but back then it was 7 times faster than the bullock teams it replaced. 4 of these Linns came to the district and 3 are known to have survived.
There is heaps of Linn info that can be googled for those who want to know more. This is a good one

The seat is padded! What do you want? Most older tractors required that you provide your own cushion.
Love the pictures. There are probably a few items like that in my area. I passed thru Nangwarry yesterday. There is a Forestry museum there. There was an orange machine with a large boom visible behind the building. I have never been into the museum. I knew the man who was mainly responsible for its establishment some years ago as my wife and I trained him and his dog in obedience. I don't think he took much in, according to his wife anyway. One of those places where it is too local to worry about looking at, but too far away to drop in. I used to live 7km South from there, but now I am about 60km North. I should make an effort. I also should say that it is only in recent years that it has become fully established. When I lived close it was only just getting off the ground.

The seat is a later embellishment There are still people around that used to drive this or one of its siblings at Mt Mistake in the 50s and they say that back then the seat was the 44gal drum fuel tank.
The Linn has no lighting or electrical sytem, and these same people also tell of driving the fully loaded Linn back to the mill along steep winding logging tracks on a dark stormy night guided only by lightening flashes. Truly scary stuff.

Visited a property at Cambooya over the weekend, the owner has some interesting stuff, one of the items is another of the Linn logging trucks that worked at Mt Mistake.
