Default Kearns S type horizontal borer Vic

Saw this posted up on the Facebook market place.
    located in Fulham in Vic.
    $6500.
Looks like a clean machine. Has the tailstock still fitted.
I need another borer like I need a hole in the head so if someone here can buy it and save me thinking about it I would be very happy

It's been for sale on eBay for ages.

Looks in reasonable shape but a bit expensive maybe. Certainly nobody is rushing to buy it. Also not interested, I have 2 HBM's, that's quite enough.

What's the quill taper on a Kearns with the facing head like that? 5 Morse?

They don't have a quill as per the normal definition of a quill, that being a traveling spindle.

I really like the look of that. I notice it was bought at auction sometime in 2017.

That's a Kearns S type. It doesn't have a quill of any sort. Strictly facing head only. They did make a variant with a quill but it *didn't* have a facing head.

If you want both you have to move up (a lot) to something like my Kearns OA which has a 5MT quill with 16" of travel and a big bolt-on facing head. It also occupies more than 2X the floor space and is almost 3X the mass - nothing comes for free.

I use my S type a lot more than my OA but it's horses for courses. If I ever have to scale down though the S type is one of the very last machines I'll ever part with. Mine is immaculate and one of the relatively rare toolroom models fitted with the Optimetric glass scales. It is a truly lovely piece of engineering. Variant22 has a somewhat newer model made after the merger of Kearns & Richards and his table reads 0-0-0 on a sensitive indicator even though they cheapened the filler & paint job.

I regard these as one of the finest pieces of machinery you can get outside something like a jig borer. They are beautifully made and dead accurate.
