Hardinge HLV–H at Hella plant closure
It's hotting up as the finish line approaches. Still pretty good value I would guess.

I had a decent look over it, it's in good shape but couldn't be tested, 8k is a lot of money for an unknown quantity. I bought an aciera F5 out of there and it's got a lot of issues, I wouldn't say it was the most careful toolroom. I think this HLV was originally at Lucas.

You're quite right about it being a lot of money for an unknown quantity Cask, it actually tops out over $9K with the included rip. I hope that the buyer isn't a bit absent minded, and forgets to turn up in time to collect!
I must say though, that it certainly looked nice in their photos, it looked to have come from an excellent toolroom. I wonder if your Aciera had been a maintenance machine, and maybe even purchased second hand when they already knew that it was likely that there was no long term future for the plant.

Yeah I had a good chat to the previous manager of the toolroom who was a nice guy. It has stopped being a real toolroom in about 2005 and moved into maintainence. Looks like they were just doing die repair. The rest of the factory was beautiful and highly automated but the toolroom was a bit rough they had a big but really badly dinged up surface plate and an abused cazenuve

You don't see these high end toolroom lathes come up too often in Australia so the price still seems reasonable to me. In the last 5 years I have only seen one other HLV-H lathe for sale, three CVAs, one non functioning 10EE, one Schaublin 120VM, one Schaublin 135 (no 150/160's). There have probably been others I'm not aware of but not many. So if you want one you have to be lucky, and/or pay plenty. Any chance the buyer is on this forum. I see he is located in Blue Mountains west of Sydney so chime in if you see this thread.

Cask, if it's still there late on the 13th of November, hang in there because at the close of business for the day, if it is still there they will scrap it!!!.

It looked better on the photos than it did in person. I had a decent look, and I didn't think it was crash hot. However I didn't see any obvious abuse. I bought a HLV-H earlier this year, and I did pay more money off a dealer but it came with every accessory and tool under the sun and it was in better condition. Everything Hardinge is very expensive as you can imagine.
The retractable toolpost was at least missing the handle if not more. Felt fairly gritty. There were a good number of collets and other bits in the cupboard but no idea if there is a complete set. Nice Swiss Multifix toolpost, but probably on the large side for a HLV-H. No idea if the DRO worked, looked like only one axis if that as per photos. Great machines, I find the collet closer and independent carriage/cross feed to be fantastic for the work I do.

Well done Devarda, thanks for your thoughts on this HLV–H, and congratulations on acquiring yours. As you say anything Hardinge is very expensive, and if you got a huge range of accessories and tooling, you may well have better value than the one from Hella, I guess it depends on just how much extra you paid. I have never seen one in the flesh, but they have a wonderful reputation for sure.

I know where there's one in perfect condition, with pretty much every accessory ever offered. Not currently for sale but likely will be one day (and no it's not mine).
If anyone outbids variant22 for it come the day, it's going to be a very, very expensive machine. No real personal interest, it's a bit too small for the stuff I do. I'd trade my Chipmaster for a decent Schaublin or an excellent 10EE but not much else.

Hi devarda,
I'm glad you bought that machine. I was going over the freight costs to get it here and argueing with myself about whether I should buy it or spend the money on moving the shed closer to completion. You saved me a difficult decision!
I do think you got a pretty good deal, there was a lot of tooling with the machine that I estimated to worth around $6k to $7k alone.
Cheers

Hi Beryl,
Funny you mention that as when I was at the dealer’s showroom I asked whether they had anyone else interested and they told me someone ‘towards Cairns’ was looking at it. They told me a ballpark figure on the freight cost and I was honestly surprised as I thought the quote was cheap.
There are a few issues I had to deal with outside general maintenance and currently sinking some more money into it. The 3 jaws are pretty bell mouthed, compound needs reworking and teflon delamination under the carriage as a few. But I hope it’ll see me through as a 25 year old musical instrument technician once Ive sorted it out. I’ll have to stick up some photos of it and the workshop once I’m done.
Coincidentally the Cazeneuve lathe at Hella that Caskwarrior mentioned ended up at the dealer too. They had another Cazenueve in great condition earlier this year that I also thought about but there’s not much left in the pockets and I couldn’t justify it for the size and type of work I usually do.
Cheers,
Aaron
