After googling a bit, it seems there is not much info out there. Possibly 20" at about 3900lbs according to some.....Really a bit big as a first shaper, and i'd have to find space for it...we shall see if there is much interest. A nice little douglas would be good..or something a bit easier to transport.

No chance on the single axle. 2T+. Crane truck needed I'd say. I was thinking 24" also.

Thanks Toggy and Bryan. Any other comments on the machine would be appreciated. Dad has his heavy ridgid license so I could always talk him into helping me if it the scraper gods are kind to me.

A heavy duty tandem or a car float should cope with that shaper. You would need to tow it with a large 4x4, or if you have a way to get it on and off you can hire a small 3 ton truck. I have a truck license, but these only need car license to drive them.
I did this to pick up my mill and shaper, and then again to pick up my panel saw, it only cost me $195 for 24 hours and diesel fuel to refill it.

The Alba came home on a hired tandem axle 8 x 5 trailer with extra parts on it behind out commodore wagon, and it did it with no trouble at all. It was towed from up country on some of the roughest roads as well. I just made sure I took some lengths of steel to spread the weight over the floor so it didn't bend the trailer floor.

That vise alone would be a two man lift..

Yes but only one day of the year.....

Queen city was only around from 1903-1927 from what I have read. Based on Cincinnati like so many manufacturers.

As for transport and the a method statement I'll cross that bridge if I get to it. Can hire a truck and hiab if needs be.

The bit wrapped in plastic would do me for a tailstock, and at $600 the buyer is unlikely not to get his money back - there is about 2.5 tonnes of high quality cast iron there, and while we have no idea of the care it has received during its life, at least the way covers are still fitted, so chances are that they could still be in good nick. One problem may be getting a suitable chuck if there is none provided in the deal. DS&G had their own propietary spindle nose design, which they called "Fastlock", no other manufacturers used this design to my knowledge, and unless this is a later build lathe, when DS&G had gone over to the more common D1-6 (I think) spindle nose, the buyer may have to fabricate his own backing plate(s) for suitable chucks. It is still a lot of lathe for $600 though, did anyone from here get it?

The Klopp has also been re-listed, same price. People in SA heads up the machine is near Mildura VIC, not in Melbourne. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=110861529067

I like the optimism in this listing - " slight surface rust" & "in pieces - suit project"

    POWER SURFACE GRINDER | eBay

I'm tempted to bid just so I can say I bought a 99c surface grinder. Anyone near/ in West Ryde who would be able to pick up the pieces and box them up?

You'll have a fight on your hands for that one. I saw it earlier and decided to go up to $4.99. Shipped though for that price.

Up to $20.50 now. I've been watching it.

As my house in Sydney is around the corner from this machine I plan on bidding on it myself because - for once - I won't have to pay extortionate freight bills.

If one of you guys outbids me I could be convinced to transport the thing as far as Melbourne provided you didn't want it until maybe September.
