HSS should be fine, I have lost count how many I have drilled over the years all with HSS

I have a friend who does gunsmith work and he uses spiral taps exclusively on tapped holes for receiver mounted scopes and the like.
I tried spiral taps and they reduce the tapping effort effort by a big factor.They were dearer but not by a lot.
Less likely to snap and reduce the chance of an unsuccessful job.

Job's done without any worries, thanks for the advice, the steel was probably as tough as 1045.
