Sine Bar Rifling Machine
G'day fellas
I've begun a rifling machine build, minimal skill so nothing too fancy, I'm putting it together from easily available parts sourced from Ebay and locally.
The sine bar will be fully adjustable allowing any twist rate per inch to be cut.
My next job is to make the adjustment mounts for the sine bar, followed by an indexable barrel vice at the other end and finally the hard part (making the cutter box and cutter) that I'll braze to the end of a long rod.
I may have to increase the diameter of the rails if it lacks rigidity, or just switch them out for fully supported linear rails, time will tell.
I hope to one day chamber and rifle my own black powder barrel.
Most of the parts were purchased from this Ebay seller items - Get great deals on items on eBay Stores!
Here is a short YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orAi33HjWB8 (one handed phone footage) sorry about that
Thanks for looking and any suggestions are welcome.
Ben

Nice work. I'm really interested to hear how it goes. That's a very affordable build and looks nice.
Good luck with the project.

I am very interested in your project. I too , at some stage ,wish to rifle my own black powder muzzle loader custom barrel barrels after twenty plus years of involvement in the sport..
I am curious about the blank barrels. Is forging and boring them an option or is buying blank hex stock to bore, the way to go?.
Obviously a lathe is in your inventory of equipment.
I do have a couple of books on traditional Muzzle loader rifling machines that may have helpful info in them.
PM follows

Hi Grahame,
I recently watched a great documentary on youtube called "Gunsmith of Williamsburg" where they begin by forging and boring a barrel but sadly the first (and most important) part of the series has since been deleted ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQKs...UIfsyjej8CHXiV (oddly enough, it sounds like it is partly narrated by William S Burroughs?!?)
Anyway, I did find a German translation of the video that contains the forging at the beginning ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfe-tndlB0U)
I was amazed at what they could accomplish with such basic hand tools. if anybody knows where I can find a copy please let me know.
To be completely honest, I'm diving into this project with very little forethought and only a few related articles I have found online and on youtube and your books might prove to be very useful, thanks for offering to share the information Grahame.
