    Default Interstate Re-location

It looks like I'll be moving back to North East Victoria early next year (YAY!) and wanted to hear from anybody who's been through the process of moving to Victoria with firearms and obtaining a new license.

I contacted the Vic firearms branch and was told there's a 3 month period where I can keep possession of my firearms while going through the process of getting a Victorian license,
but what happens if it takes longer to get the paperwork and safety course completed?

It's all a little confusing so any first hand experience would be great.

    Thanks

    Ben

I asked a related question of NSW Firearms a few years ago.

It's possible (or it was in 2012) to have a NSW Registered Firearm (longarm) but to use a Victoria address as the safe keeping storage location.
Given that Australian firearms laws are nearly identical state to state, there will be something similar between SA and Vic.

Transferring a Victorian registered firearm (longarm) to NSW was, in 2012, very painless. You basically just had to get a transfer form from a Vic fireams dealer and then take the firearm to a NSW dealer to get it registered in NSW.

If needs be you can transfer the firearm to a friend (either in SA or Vic) or store it with a dealer while you wait for the new paperwork to be issued.
As far as I recall, you can remain the "legal" owner while the friend / dealer is the custodian. You just can't possess (i.e. use) the firearm until the new paperwork is issued.
    regards from Canmore

    Thanks Ian

My next question is about Victoria's genuine reason requirements, I currently hold a South Australian Cat A/B purpose 2-3 (hunting & target shooting)

I'm a member of the SSAA so I think that covers the target shooting aspect, as for the hunting I'm not sure, I found a section on the Victorian Game Management Authority website that states,

"While a game licence is not required to hunt pest animals, some hunters will need to get a Registration of interest to hunt pest animals on Crown land in order to have a genuine reason to obtain a firearm with which to hunt pest animals."

is anybody familiar with using this as a genuine reason on their application?
is it some kind of permit I renew yearly and carry while hunting pest animals?

    Thanks

SSAA membership provides both the target and hunting endorsement for a Vic Cat A&B licence.
I recommend calling the Vic Police Licensing and Regulations Division contact person for the district you are moving to in Victoria. They will be able to provide the info you require for your license transfer and firearms storage requirements for Vic.
