Thread cutting on L565D lathe
Hey folks, new member 1st post. Trying to cut 28TPI thread on my lathe, got a 42 tooth gear to adjust gearing to cut correct thread but can't get a thread indicator table to suit this set up. Machinery warehouse have contacted the lathe manufacturers, but being chinese new year, no luck. I have to use this particular thread as it has to match the already purchased muzzle brake.

Has your lathe got a metric leadscrew or imperial?

Thread cutting on L565D lathe
Thanks for the reply I have a metric leadscrew. I think it is a 4mm pitch but I cannot confirm this from the manual. I can only assume this from other charts I have found on the net for this model of lathe.

How did you work out you needed a 42 tooth gear.

The main man at machinery warehouse got me an old thread chart for my lathe. They stopped putting the old chart on the lathe in 2016. The only problem is I can't find an Indicator chart to tell me when to engage the half nut so I can get correct timing on the thread.

You will need to keep the halfnuts engaged, your chasing dial only suits metric threads, it won't do imperial.

Thanks guys, I just can't afford to stuff this up. The barrel is an expensive target 223. I really appreciate the help and feed back.

Seeing that this seems to be the first Imperial thread you have cut, are you familiar with the process of cutting this thread with the half nuts left engaged.

If you can't afford to stuff it up then it might be a good idea to do a dummy run on a bit of scrap mild steel to check fits etc.

Most gunsmiths I have had any thing to do with do not use the chasing dial they all seem to use the reverse cut method. I think this is because it it easier to adjust the shoulder so the break aligns correctly.

Thanks Guys, I will be using the reverse cut method. I have used it before on some hydraulic valves I had to fix but they were common imperial threads.

Would definitely cut a test thread on some scrap before starting on the part in question, to test the information you were given regarding the gear train, and to test your fits with the mating part as well.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
