Default blacksmiths at Oberon 'Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair' 9/2/2013

    G'day everyone.
A friend and I have plans to attend the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair this weekend.
See: Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair » Oberon NSW, 8-10th February 2013 for more information, come check it out, I've heard good reviews.
We are both very new to demonstrating, so just having the set-up safe and functional will be our main achievement!

Hopefully I will see you there.
    regards,
    AndrewOC

The Ornamental Turners (OTGA) will also be demonstrating there on Saturday.

We will be featuring ornamental turning with two rose engine lathes, bowl turning, spindle turning, and miniature turning on a home-made micro-lathe.

LOL! We certainly learnt from our first year. Take a change of clothes!
Weather was looking good, but I see that they are now forecasting partly sunny with showers for Saturday.
Last year, the organisers were watching the weather radar, and we were able to get out before the storm hit.
It will still be a good day though.

Well I had fun this weekend! This is in spite of my friend seizing the engine in his old Pajero, and havin to limp home. Also the storms visited again, (each evening!) but well timed- only bucketing down after we had finished each day.

I am thinking about going to Maitland 'Steamfest', which is another tremendous event: Home - Steamfest
It is on the 13th / 14th of April this year, then there is Ironfest (Lithgow) on the 20th/ 21st of April.
Lots of improvements to my 'kit' to do in the meantime... mainly to make everything easier!

Thanks to all that came around to say hi, it makes the forum friendships come full circle.

PS my 'stall neighbours' Rare Chairs and the Wood Guys were real great to be around, and really made the weekend.

    Default forge pic

Ok, finally found the one picture I took.
This shows my friends forge, I used coal 'fines' (or 'slack') around the tuyere to make the hearth. Keeping this damp and compacted while running the fire in the 'ducks nest' cooks this coal into 'breeze' (blacksmith made coke) which burns beaut. The large lumps to the left of the tuyere and closest to the camera is some of the coke I made that morning.

    cheers,

Looks a little shallow Andrew to what I am used to seeing used.

That was it pulled apart at the end of the day, ran it at least 6" deep.
