FS - Damaged Hafco (Metalmaster) AL330A - Manufactured 2004
For Sale is a damaged Metalmaster (Hare and Forbes) AL330A.
This machine was damaged whilst being moved and it fell on its face.
Damage is:
1. Saddle is bent about 3-4 thou and needs grinding and scraping back in. A new Saddle is NOT available.
2. Cross-slide screw is bent - I have purchased a new cross-slide screw and nuts - You can purchase these for what I paid for them (about$190) or attempt to straignten the old one.
3. Various knobs, handwheels and handles have been trashed, Ive done a VERY ROUGH repair on the carriage handwheel. (it was shattered into 4 Pieces)
This lathe was used in a small repair and hobby workshop and until the accident was working fine.
Comes complete with all standard accessories supplied by H & F:
3 & 4 jaw chucks.
Fixed & Traveling Steady.
Standard tool Post
Change Gears etc......
The quote to grind and scrape the saddle and crossslide was about $400 and the bed about $900. provided that the lathe is completeley stripped and only the components sent to be ground.
Whether the bed really needs doing I dont know, all I Know is that the saddle power control gets extremeley stiff about 6 inches from the end of the bed.
Lathe is located at Batemans Bay and the asking price is $1500 ONO
Loading facilities are available at site Weight is about 400 Kilos
Pics are availabe at https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...lk?usp=sharing

Secondhand machinery in "good working condition" is worth (as my rule of thumb) about half price of new.
This lathe far exceeds this and also needs alotta work..... it is actually scrap metal in this condition and as such
it is only worth scrap metal price, so...at a guess... 150 bucks.

Unfortunately shed is right . It will most probably have a bent lead screw and a bent forward reverse shaft in addition to what you have stated . It's a shame but no one is going to pay $1500 when a new similar lathe is $3000 new . If you have the time I would sell the parts separately on ebay , starting with the chucks . That way you may recover more money than selling as is .
Under the circumstances I'm not sure this is an advantage lol , " Loading facilities are available at site Weight is about 400 Kilos " . I once went to a guys place to help him move and position his lathe and I had to intervene and stop them lifting it as they had it rigged wrong . It's very easy to lift a lathe wrongly . It's a tragedy when one drops .The volume of a pizza of thickness 'a' and radius 'z' is given by pi z z a.

That's not too bad , considering everything but I am sure the buyer is not fully aware of any damage that is not obvious to the eye . On the other hand the buyer may have other plans for the basic bed and centre other than operate as a normal lathe for example a rigid wood lathe , lapidary tumbler etc. Which makes the price ok for them .

Could have been a good thing to cnc as well because a lot of the screws etc will be replaced with ball screws anyway and the handles/knobs etc won't be needed anymore.

As a member, deads is entitled to sell his lathe for whatever price he wants to ask for it.
It not for us to criticize his pricing, what ever the opinion we hold about it.
The likely result is that we have now alienated deads and he is PO'd and may not be back.
I held a similar opinion as most of you blokes have had, about the pricing. I approved the post but I refrained from any comment for that very reason.
I understand that some people join just to sell their stuff and they never heard from again.
It is true to a certain extent. But some members we keep, others it is hard to ascertain if they are lurkers or just voted with their feet.
As I understand it, the above is the forum policy that currently applies.
Too late, for this time around but I'll try and get keep an eye on For Sale posts and if comments are made not strictly relative to the potential purchase of the advertised item, I shall remove them. Inquires certainly, but no opinions, please.
No more discussion on this thread thank you. That is what will happen - unless of course, Ubeaut advises me differently.
