Default Expressions of Interest - Dawn Offset Cast Steel Vise.

This a a bit of a feeler to see if there is any interest in this vise. It was new in the early 1940's as my father bought it and it has been around all my life. Where it is is very difficult to get it out of and the thing weighs so much I don't want to go to the trouble of getting it out if no one shows any interest. It would definitely be pick up only as no courier in their right mind would want to handle it due to its weight. I already have one so I don't need it and if anyone is seriously interested we can talk money and I will try and get some sort of photo but that may not be possible. To give you an idea we used a small hoist to get it where it is and a lot of stuff has been stacked on top of it. I am in Helensburgh between Wollongong and Sydney.

To be decided Kryn but I am not going to give it away as it is such a good thing. Originally planned to keep it for my son but he shows no signs of leaving the nest yet and he will eventually get mine anyway.

To be fair I have to put a price on it, let's say $400 negotiable. I wonder if I have misled you as it might be cast iron but I wouldn't have a clue how to tell except the one sitting on my bench says steel on it and they are worth $977 at Blackwoods. I bought that for $50 back in 1980 second hand!! Has anyone got an old Dawn catalogue?

What colour is the vice? There's is, I believe, two grades, both cast iron. What size is it?

It could well be, Did Dawn make a cast steel vise in the 1940"s as well as a cast iron vise? As for colour it is the colour of the material it is made of and has the patina of a vise made in the 1940's and used for all those years. The one on my bench has the word steel cast into it but I don't recall this one having that so I am thinking it is cast iron. Where the body of my steel vise is relieved for the bolts to hold the vise jaws this one has no relief and the screws are go through the jaw into the vise body.

Just a note on moving it (although you probably already know), with my Dawn offset cast vice (150mm) you can simply wind the jaw right out of the body, making for 2 bits weighing 25ish kg instead of one 50kg lump... A lot easier to deal with (once you get all the crap off the top of it!).

I wish I had thought of that before we stored it, life would have been much easier. Its funny how the obvious escapes us when we are doing something.
