Precision Grinding on a largish surface grinder. The ways on these machines are not that long.

I have this back together mechanically it has cleaned up quite well and doesnt have enough wear in it for me to want to get it re-machined yet. Here are a couple of photos.Attachment 372349Attachment 372347Attachment 372348
I should have the electrics done quite quickly but I am picking up a Colchester Bantam on Wednesday so it will probably be next week before I get the chance.
[QUOTE=Anorak Bob;1928642]Hi Eric,
While you have things apart there is one small modification that might prove useful. Drilling and tapping a hole in the table feed shaft casting will allow the fitting of a locking thumb wheel. When I acquired the No.1 from Peter Fou it had a lock consisting of a cap screw and a large knurled nut. I replaced it with the one piece wheel below. The table will still move slightly due to gear backlash but being able to stop it sliding with the twist of the wheel is a handy thing.
Bob.

Bob my hercus #1 came with the following item for locking the table. Attachment 372350I think it is original as it looks like some off the knobs on the other attachments. It is made of brass.
Thank you Eric,
Not a bad idea making the thing from brass, When I photographed my knurled version it was, dishearteningly, brown with rust. Probably used that nasty 1214 thinking it was out of harm's way!
Bob.
With the table locker being made from Brass, it wouldn't damage the table, as would a steel one. If you can't get some brass the correct size, fitting a brass screw, out of an electrical plug/socket will do the job. Drill a slightly smaller hole than the screw and tap in with a hammer.

Something like this Kryn? //metalworkforums.com/f189/t200...42#post1928642
That's the one Bob, I forgot I'd seen it before. :doh:Dam CRAFT disease.

I am still working on this. I put new SKF bearings in the universal head. Some time ago @MichaelG gave me some felt for use in the dust seals on the grinding shaft, luckily it was also perfect for the dust seal on the end of the head.

Attachment 373964Attachment 373963Attachment 373962Attachment 373961A bit more rust removal and cleaning up. I feel like this is on the home stretch now.
Which of the 2 is this one Eric, yours or mine? Nice cleanup and assembly work.
Kryn
It still mine. Yours is the 3A model (different Z mechanism) and is dirty and as rusty as this one was to begin with other than the bits that have been re-machined.
Just thought you were being really generous to an old gery atric:D
For Kryn and others following this thread. You might remember I started with a Hercus #3A T&C grinder and had the ballways reground and a new lead screw for the infeed and a new V belt pulley made before being distracted by a much younger model Hercus #1 with the better designed vertical axis. Well I promised Kryn he could buy this so I am putting it back together for a trip to Murray Bridge. Here is progress so far.

I represent that remark!!! I know I asked for it, and I'm happy about it.:2tsup:
Looking forward to getting it in the shed.
