Default machining compound slide mounting spigot

Any advice on best way to machine the tapered section of the hercus compound mounting spigot, the part that goes into the cross slide? What angle is it meant to be?

From memory when I saw mine ages ago it would be a 45°ish cone
I'll measure when I get home

To machine the spigot I'd either set up on a rotary table with a milling cutter or if I had a lathe big enough, put it on a face plate. It depends a bit on why you are machining it too. Are you repairing damage, making up from new or devising an accessory that fits in that place? You may be limited by the part size and weight.

I'm making an accessory to fit in it's place, just a fixed toolpost stand out of some 90mm round. I will be turning it on the lathe as I don't have a mill. I usually get a lot of chatter with form tools so I'm thinking of setting compound at the correct angle, grind a suitable RH turning tool and machine up to the left/top shoulder. Or is there a better way?

Would you please post some pics of the tool post when it’s finished?

It will be a platform for toolpost to sit on top but sure.

I assume you’re trying to increase rigidity by removing the top slide?

I have trouble with the compound moving with chattering when parting off. I thought I could take it out of the equation. Also might be useful for other jobs.
I've not had much success with parting off yet. Almost every time something scary happens.

Are you using a lantern post or 4 way?
Are the gibs adjusted to reduce slop?
Do you lock the carriage when parting?

4 way QCTP. I wouldn't call the gibbs sloppy, though the compound is free to move. I could perhaps tighten it a bit. I lock the carriage.

Not sure where all the chatter is coming from. The machine is on casters at the moment which is probably not helping. I do use the QCT holder for parting blade which has a built in angle which I think contributed to my last "scary moment". Do others use back rake in their parting tool?
