    Default hercus 260g sold $7000

watched a hercus 260g on grays auctions end last night and the last 10 minutes was a bidding frenzy
after i almost fell off my chair and the dust had settled the winning bidder after gst , commission ect was up for around $7000
i saw one on ebay a while back for $3500 that sold
watching the grays bidding was more entertaining than watching the tv, i could not believe what i was seeing
must have been two people that really wanted it

Wow, that's a big price for a Hercus. They come up for sale often enough that I would have thought the law of supply and demand wouldn't push the price up that much. Did it come with a few goodies, like a taper turning attachment?

If it was in good nick and had a bunch of accessories, I reckon that’s a good buy. Aren’t the G’s quite rare? I think Hercus lathes in good condition will only increase in value.

I think the 260g is actually a heated headstock with a greater range of speeds, did it get a hardened bed?

The main difference is the G is a gear driven model Mine has 18 speeds 50 rpm too 2580 rpm. They also have both a lead scew and drive shaft for powered feed. I believe the hardened bed was just an option.

2580 is pretty fast for straight cut gears, is it really howling at those speeds?

Yes. At my last school, where we had a few DGM's, the kids would love to distract the operator, click the lathe up to top gear and engage the leadscrew geartrain, preferably in a pretty tall gear there too. Poor timmy would come back to his machine, thinking all was right in the world and switch it on...oh the noise, yeah, they howled alright.
