    Default Hercus 260 ATM 19688

    Hey all.

Posted this up (at least I thought I did...) last night but it didn't show up, so here goes. Just took ownership of my first ever lathe, Hercus ATM serial 19688. It's in great condition and came complete with a heap of extras all for the price of...a carton of Coopers Pale Ale.

Anyhow, expect to hear more from me as I ask innumerable questions...ACDC Tig welding is my thing, I am an utter newbie on lathes.

    Meanwhile...a few pics.

    Ha, thanks Kryn.

Truth be told they wanted nothing at all for it (it came from a school) but seeing as they also helped me lift it onto my trailer, I thought a carton of coldies was the very least I could do.

Better still, it seems to have opened the door to more potential workshop freebies/bargains in the future...

    Mozzy,

Hopefully amongst the heap of extras there is the lathe's tailstock. If not, a replacement might cost you a bit more than a carton of p.ss!

    Welcome to the forum.

    Hey Bob.

Yep, came with tailstock plus dead centre, live centre, drill chuck, the lot.

Went to the school last night to pick up the key for the Rev/Stop/Fwd barrel...and came home with the key plus a heap of HSS tools including parting off blades and a few other bits and pieces as well.

They guy at the school mentioned they'd be retiring their old Hercus mill soon, too. Seems I'm on a roll!

Yeah, I seem to be in good with them now. I made it very clear that I wasn't grabbing the 260 to sell off on Gumtree or anything, but that it was going to a good home and that I would be working with it until the day I die. We talked about my bike racing, fabrication, ACDC Tig, all the stuff I do so I guess they now understand that I am a workshop obsessive who will actually appreciate and use this stuff.

I reckon that mill is worth another carton for sure!

    Moz,

The mill needs its vertical head and spindle mounted drive gear. Make sure they are included when you hand over that nasty pale ale.

    Bob -

Good tip. I know even less about mills than I do about lathes (if that's possible!) so a mill would be yet another steep learning curve. But then I remember when I first got started on my ACDC Tig welder I thought I'd never get my head around it and as it happened, all it took was a few years of determined practise!

We all have to start somewhere Moz.

There are a few of us here with Hercus No.O mills. I'm sure there will be help when you need it.
