What is the preferred type/grade of steel for making cross/compound slide screws?

For easy thread cutting, some 1214 would be good but really just about grade of steel will do as lead screws are not highly stressed, are (or should be) well lubricated and have relatively low loads on them in respect to their size.

I made one out of 4140. In the US they can get a high carbon free machining steel, it would be ideal. It is 1144.
