Riser block for increased height on Hercus OLM mill?
Hi,
I noticed a youtube video by Affetkak on the Hercus OLM milling machine in which he mentions his intention to add a precision riser block to give more working height but can't find anything online to confirm if he actually managed it - has anyone tried this or know anything else about the idea?

Hi Swarfman and welcome to the forum,
I moved the post here into the Hercus Sub Forum as where you posted it is the area to discuss forum technical problems.
Sorry that I have to pick on you when you have only been here 5 minutes but the post probably would not receive an answer down there as few go there.
Can I recommend you go to the FORUM button -Top LH of the screen- click and click again on FORUM HOME and that will bring up the scroll down of all the areas. Some of us put in our suburb -see Top of page- as sometimes practical 1 on 1 help can be offered if the responder to your post knows you live in the next suburb. Have a good look through and get used to all the Forum areas.
Locality can be adjusted in Forum Actions - underneath Forum box and 7 over- click and select-Edit Profile.
You will that there is a very capable and helpful group here you will go out of there way to help a new fella. Sometimes you may have wait as a some - with that answer that you seek -don't login as regularly as others do.
Again! a big welcome
Grahame

This would be a fairly hefty task, a riser would be of no benefit in horizontal mode because you cant change the horizontal spindle to table relationship. With the vertical head, you could raise it but would need the change the drive arrangement to the vertical head, add an extra gear to allow you to move it up or move to silent chains or timing belt. Cheapest riser block would be a bigger mill.

Not sure if this is the right spot to post my queery but here goes nothing. I have a Hercus universal milling machine, it came with the original vice, a whole range of other goodies but unfortunately no dividing head It also seems to be missing the draw bar. Could someone send me some dimensions so I can make one to the same specifications as the original? I would really like to keep this beast of a small mill as original as possible. Thanks and sorry if its in the wrong section

Hi Swarfman
Well I bought my Model 0 with a 'riser' already installed about 20 or 25 years ago. The pics I have are from when I refurbished it.
You will see that what was required was a) an extension to the table screw b) an extension to the column dovetail and c) an extension to the column.
The column extension looks to have been fabricated from 2 plates about 10mm thick and a piece of hollow square section tube welded together. The square section is abouth the same widt as the Hercus column but not as deep so the modifier inserted a thick steel plate as a fin at the back. The dovetail extension was just pinned and bolted to the extended column. Accuracy wise this is probably the hardest task - mine is a few thou out so when the table is lowered to the bottom I have to readjust the dovetail gib. I plan (one day) to do an accurate measure of the alignment error and have the dovetail extension reground to correct it.
I can post more pics and give you actual dimensions if that helps.
No modification to the drive was required.

I recognise that machine! It's on Tony's website! That additional height must be very handy as the Hercus really is a very compact machine!

Stretched HERCUS Model O
Yes I sent Tony a few picks when I was about half way through the reno.
The extra height is indeed handy especially when using the vertical head etc. Not sure all the extra length was needed - guess the person who remodelled it didn't want to cut the square section down. It is about 10mm thick wall.

Well hi Affetkak (Now TommyGun Machining) here! The plan is to start on the riser block and other mill upgrades once I finish my QCGB build
Planning on talking through this one a fair bit more, maybe some scraping and matching the dovetails
