Default Hercus Lathe motor Star to Delta conversion,

A friend of mine picked up a 1960's roller bearing 9 inch lathe and was asking about a suitable single phase motor to allow it to be used at home on 240 volts. I suggested that it would be best to use the original motor and convert it to Delta and run it from a VFD. We found a small drive and Ebay and I got stuck into the conversion while we waited for the drive to arrive. These motor are well made and relatively easy to convert for 240 volt 3 phase operation.

The Hercus 9" lathe motors are indeed pretty accessible and have plenty of room to perform this task. I have done three of these and have one more on the bench to do.

One of the hardest I was involved with was ABs Hercus tool and cutter grinder motor which was only 1/30th of a HP and had wires on it like fine hair. Another tricky one was a 1HP GMF motor from a Woodfast lathe . the star point was at the other end of the motor from the mains in-out connectors and there was absolutely zero room to get the star point connects back to the other end. In the end I had to go out through the motor end cap and back down outside the motor in a conduit to the main motor connection box. Anyway it works.
