    Default My First Hercus

Cleaned out part of my shed to fit this beautiful old machine in, looks right at home, everything looks original except for drive motor unit and counterweight pulley brackets and bearings, which i will clean and tidy up.

These machines were made to last, I was very surprised when i researched the serial number and the age of it. 70yrs..

Congratulations on your 'new' Hercus. Be careful, they are addictive....I have 2, a model C from 1943 and an AR from 1968, use them both and have been collecting accessories as I find them at swap meets and Ebay. I really like that they are Aussie made in an era when we did make things in this country, and when people needed and used manual lathes.

Welcome to the forum - you will find lots of info and help here. Happy turning!

    Cheers, Tony

Hi Ken, yes a few accessories that came with lathe, already bookmarked AMH for tooling and possible parts, can you or anyone tell me where the three collars on the clear lid would be for, look to me they may be from the original drive mount assembly, the swivel bar on the clear lid would that be an item used with a lathe, and the blue round magnetic gauge has the smallest needle and increments i have seen, also the worm screw would that be an original part from drive adjustment assembly, i think some of the drill attachments tapers are too big for this lathe and were thrown in, also the backing plate is 230mm and too big for machine. apart from that stoked with what i got.

Hi Chris, I plan on it m8.

    Hi Tony,

    Totally agree m8.

In the second photo the drill chuck MT on the RHS looks like an MT2 which should fit while the other one looks like an MT3.
Multiple drill chucks come in handy as it reduces the time in repeatedly swapping out bits.
Replacement arbors are not that expensive.

Peter, I think the collars you refer to are from the original drive mechanism (so called H pattern), the counter shaft bearings. See attached pages from the spare parts book.
I cant place that long coarse threaded screw - understand why you would think it was a belt tensioning device of some sort - but I don't think it comes of a Hercus. Perhaps others might have come across it in some configuration that I am unaware of.
As Bob pointed out, the tail stock is an M2. You can certainly take the M3 shank out of the chuck and replace with an M2 - although, sometimes getting the old one out can be a bit of a job!
Looks like you got a really good deal with the lathe and the boxes of bits. A good start.

If you do have an MT3 chuck as Bob suggests it will fit the headstock taper, and will come in handy for drilling workpieces mounted on the slotted cross slide.

I didn't mean that but it's good point although I'm not sure he has a slotted cross slide.
