    Default Hercus Headstock Bearings

    Hi,

I know this subject has been covered before but I can't find it using the search function so I'm asking again.

I think my bearings in my Hercus 260 ATM have finally chucked it in. I'm going to strip the headstock sooner or later.

If I do need to replace them, what are replacements, where do I get them et.c et.c.

I think I read somewhere you can use standard trailer bearings?

    Ben.

I just seen on AMW you can get 9" bearings. Will these fit on a 260?

Well played around with the headstock today. I noticed the spindle had some play in it (after reading a post by Pipeclay from some years back), I didn't measure the play - I could see it when I put pressure on the chuck. So I removed the take up nut and front and read bearing caps. I recorded the Timken numbers on the bearings, Rear main bearing (on left of HS as you look at it) 111622, Front main bearing (on right of HS) 18690.
I decided not to take the spindle out and instead fitted everything back on. I tightened the take up nut right up so the spindle could not be moved by hand (and all play was removed) and then gradually loosened the take up nut until the spindle spun freely without any play. Once I was happy everything was checked for tightness and I ran the lathe at top speed for 5 minutes. There was no noticeable heat build up. I then started on completing a job I was on, monitoring the bearings. So far so good.

I did some searching on ebay for replacement bearings:

Will any of these work? I haven't tried Australian suppliers yet but I don't reckon they'd be cheaper.

Usually it is not the spindle bearings that are worn out causing issues.

But anyway, you need a cup and cone for each end and apparently the cup is a flanged version so not as common

I think your right. Tightening up the take up nut helped a lot. I also need to replace one V belt, thankfully not the spindle belt.
