Default How to remove screw gear?

I need to remove the nut holding the screw gear on the side of the gearbox on my 260A. What's the correct/safest way to stop the gearbox from rotating? I tried putting the back gear in but the nut is quite tight and only results in shifting the idler bracket away from the stud gear and eventually disengaging. Any suggestions?

It should not of been that tight.

You may find that the end of the thread sticking out of the nut may be burred.

Have you been able to get the nut to move at all?

If the nut has moved a little but then bound up , you may need to re tighten the nut, remove the rest of the gear train and remove the burr from the end of the shaft by use of some type of mechanical means.

If the nut is just tight but not seized you may be able to use a little heat.

Another option depending on how much you adore your machine is to put a bit of protection around the parallel part of the leadscrew nearest the gear box and grab this with stillsons and then try to remove the retaining nut.

The nut hasn't moved at all yet. Haven't checked the thread at the end, I'll do that but I think it's just been done up tight.

If I held the gear in a wooden clamp or something and turned the nut, am I likely to break anything?

It's a normal right hand thread right?

    Yes it is right hand.

No harm in trying the timber,if you start to see the nut move try and make sure it is really the nut turning and not the nut twisting the screwed end of the leadscrew.

You may need to cut the nut off and run a die nut over the thread or file it.

    I got it off.
I put a piece of wood under the idler bracket so it couldn't spin, engaged backgear and carefully applied force to the nut. It released without too much fuss.
