Hercus 3A Tool and Cutter grinder.
Hi all
I just bought a Hercus 3A tool and cutter grinder of Gumtree https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hend...der/1157773520
I can't get it home for a week or so because of other commitments however I did notice that I could make the table rock . I couldn't work out if what was the cause of this or even if this was ok. Unfortunately I wont see the machine again for a week and it is playing on my mind. Can anyone explain what the rollers the table rides on look like and how many there are? Sketches/Diagrams would be of help too.
Regards
Eric

I saw that come up on Gumtree for $400, looks like a good buy.
I know next to nothing about tool and cutter grinders but I believe the Hercus 3A has two rows of bearings under the table..? Will have to wait for the Hercus experts to come along and answer your question.
I'm curious myself as I was recently offered one for free provided I give it a good home

I was able to rock the table 1/4" by pressing on each end of it. The way it rocked seemed to indicate it was only supported in three places (is that possible?)
I Would love a diagram of the pertinent parts but can't find a manual online.
Maybe you should give me the free one you have been offered so I can use this as a parts machine?
It did come with some accessories mainly for cylindrical grinding though.

I had a good laugh at that, thanks and nice try!
I found a couple of pics under the table in this thread that might help you

That is very informative. I still have no idea why I am able to rock the table but it is clear that only the keepers on the outside hold the table down so I should be able to pull it off and have a quick see if I have wasted my money once I get the machine home.
My next question is how much do these things weigh?

I'll keep it in mind Kryn but I don't like your chances, it's a complete and running grinder with all the various attachments like indexing head, chucks, tailstock and box of about 50 oxide grinding wheels. too good to pass up

Nedshead, the way I figure it is that at your age you could afford to wait another 20 years, in the mean time i will care and provide for it.

Yes, but if you are due to be dissected by student doctors shortly then what need do you have for either machine?

Hi Eric
I sent you a link in response to the other thread that has some photos of how the table runs, it just sits on ball bearings and if someone has lost them by poor handling it would certainly rock. A new set would be a minor thing to put in, they are loose. From the tiny thumbnail that is all that remains on Gumtree I think that this may be a Number 1, a later machine which is much better sealed against grinder dust.
I think that I remember that it weighs around 350kg.
I look forward to seeing some photos in due course.
Regards
Ian

Hi Ian,
It is definitely a 3A I saw it on the nameplate. Pity as the #1 is much better sealed against dust in the y and z slideways. I am going to hire a small truck to move it on monday.
I had a good long read of the thread on your rebuild. It looks like I have a large proportion of accessories but it also looks like I have a fair few things to make in order that I can use it usefully.
I am fairly keenly interested to get it home and take a good look at what ails it. I was thinking of removing the table before moving it. Is there much involved in doing that?
Regards
Eric

Hi Eric
For lifting mine has two holes though the sides of the upper casting to take a bar that a strap can be passed around. It will then lift easily with an engine crane. I did it last week when we moved.
The top two layers of the table (above the ball bearings) can be removed by taking off the three retainers (1 front, 2 back) that run in the slots on the edge of the table, it will just then lift off. Take some placky bags as taking off the table will expose a lot of loose ball bearings that you will have to collect.
Regards
Ian
