There was some real progress this week. Firstly another member very kindly made an extremely pleasing leadscrew and nut for the Y axis and refurbished or remade a number of the other components for the screw. The photo shows the old screw on the right and the new screw on the left with the remade or refurbished components on the left. I am extremely grateful for both his workmanship and also his guidance.

Secondly Precision Grinding beat their estimated time by about 75% and returned the saddle, table and sub table to me all reground on both sides. Somehow these photos are out of order but images 1 and 5 are the same piece and 2 and 4 are the same piece and 3 and 6 are the same piece. The process should have ensured the ground bottom of the Y axis dovetail seen in photo 2 should be parallel to the top surface of the table shown in image 3 once the balls are in place in the V ways shown in images 3 and 6.

The spindle extension and washer are rather crusty and the condition of the Z ways is undetermined at the moment so these are the next areas that will be getting some love. Hopefully I can post some more photos soon.

Are you doing anything about your balls?

If you wanted to check them a tip I got from Machtool was make a slight ramp, get some gauge blocks and parallels. Make up the first bridge so it blocks all the oversize ones. Make a second bridge so it lets the undersize ones through. The ones caught up are the size you want.

I have done the smallest amount of work on this over the weekend. A replacement shaft for the X axis handwheel. Original shown with replacement.

    Default Simple Table Lock

    Hi Eric,

While you have things apart there is one small modification that might prove useful. Drilling and tapping a hole in the table feed shaft casting will allow the fitting of a locking thumb wheel. When I acquired the No.1 from Peter Fou it had a lock consisting of a cap screw and a large knurled nut. I replaced it with the one piece wheel below. The table will still move slightly due to gear backlash but being able to stop it sliding with the twist of the wheel is a handy thing.

    Hi Bob

That is a great idea and trivial for me to implement at this stage.

I just went and looked at the casting .... It already has a threaded hole in the correct location! So I have a cute little turning project to undertake.

I will take anything that the new one needs then re-home it in Murray Bridge. So if there is much worth having depends very much if what I bought is only what is in the photo.

So this purchase is looking quite good. Only a few small items missing and I can rat those from the 3A. Turns out it did have some tooling which I was kind of betting on anyway. It is an awful long way to Mt Gambier and back in a day hence I neglected to visit Kryn on the way past.

I realise it's a long way there and back, so you're forgiven for not dropping by, maybe next time? What's the condition like on the "new" one? Glad it came with some of the accessories, makes it easier to copy the parts I'll need for the old one.

    Some handy gear there Eric!!

The indexer located above the two internal grinding spindles appears to be the one normally mounted on a vertical milling slide. Here's mine from when I had the No 3 anchor - //metalworkforums.com/f65/t1781...53#post1711153. The workhead looks to be the earlier version incorporating a very useful threaded spindle nose, a feature bewilderingly absent on the later model.

Most of the major accessories that accompanied my grinder are stamped with matching serial numbers. Checking alignment might be prudent if mixing and matching is intended. Unlike Schaublin, I don't imagine Hercus guaranteed interchangeability!

    Bob.
