As mentioned in my last post I said I would share photos of the (almost) completed restoration of my 1958 Hercus Lathe.
I still have to wait a bit before I can start doing some turning as I have an electrician coming to wire in the 1/2HP single phase motor and install a new start/stop switch and make safe the general wiring in the garage.
Its been a great challenge and I have really enjoyed the time spent working on it and getting to know how things tick.
I am sure you've spotted the obvious mistake with the red and black colouring on the gear box plate! I gave it a thorough cleaning but there appeared to be some engrained black (paint?) in one particular area where the red was supposed to be and despite my determined effort I couldn't shift it. This black showed through the new red paint and I wasn't happy with it. Hence the reversal of the colours.

I have finally got my Hercus, and my garage, wired up by an electrician last week. My first project was to turn up a replacement saddle locking screw with a little modification. I don't always put the spanner down in the same place so I thought i would add a little tommy bar to it. It works very well. It was my first shot at single point threading on this machine and I wasn't disappointed with the Hercus' performance. Very easy to use and a pleasure to work on.
Apologies for the orientation of the second photo it was the correct way round on file!

Very nice, has come up great.
Are those belt guards standard for Hercus? I think my 9a is about 10 years earlier and doesn't have them.

Hi Joe88.
Unfortunately I dont have the answer to your question. The motor belt guard appears to be reasonably well made but not quite as well finished as the rest of the machine. its also made from sheet steel but the spindle belt guard is aluminium and I though they may have both been the same. Maybe others in the forum can assist?

Nice job on the the restoration there Vince.
The belt guard on the headstock is a standard unit as I have the same one on one of my wrecked lathes. I think that a lot of guards were retro-fitted in the later years especially people making metal guards for the motor pulleys as I have seen a few home made jobs of those.
Enjoy using the lathe although it seems a shame to use them after all of that work goes into them.

Hi Tinkerer77,
Thanks for the appreciative comments and the response to the guards.
As for your comment on 'it being a shame to use it after all of the work that goes into them', even after a short space of time that gleam of new paint, especially around the headstock and top of the saddle, is now taking on the hue of dirty oil from using the lathe! its a real shame to see them lose the shine but like most users it would be more of a shame not to use them!
Vince.
