Default A Youtube series: The adventures of WELDA, saga of the 1970s Hercus 9A restoration

I had a search in the forum to see if anyone had mentioned the existence of this series on Youtube before, but I did not find any records of it in forum posts, which is not what I would have expected. I may have been searching incorrectly, in which case, if it has been mentioned before, my apologies for repeating the information to the forum redundantly.

The featured Hercus had taper roller bearings, beware the difference between Timken 18620 and Timken 18620B bearings (?)

I do not know if the links (see below, there are a lot episodes, but they are commercial free) will work or not until I try it.

There are parts / episodes missing, mostly the missing parts were either not recorded in the first place, or the camera / iphone killed itself, or the hard disk of WELDA (aka Greg ?) crashed.

    #WELDA Day 1 - Lathe Restoration

#WELDA Day 2 - Lathe resto - surface prep tools and techniques

#WELDA Day 15 - Lathe Restoration - Prepping for more paint

    #WELDA Day 16 - Lathe Resto - Body Filler

#WELDA Day 17 - Lathe Restoration - Fill Sand Paint

I had a quick look through some of the video , was there a survey done on the machine ? As all I can see that he has done is repainted a lathe and replaced the spindle bearing, and is there a post "rebuild" accuracy check ?

I would like to see two extra, digitally remastered, director's cut episodes, namely:

Day X, Removal of headstock from bed

Day Z, Re-assembly of headstock on bed

The removal of the headstock is quite easy, it is just clamped down with 2 bolts, you can get to the front end with a socket and short extension and the back with a spanner, refitting is easy enough and you have to make sure you line up the reverse shaft gear with the rest of the rest of the gear train and clamp it back down, the headstock will go back in to it's original position on the bed as it guided by the V way but this is where cleanliness is critical. Replacing the bearings is not an overly fun job as getting the cups out is quite painful as there is not a lot of room to knock them out. Resetting of the spindle is a bit tricky as well, the Textbook of Turning says that the spindle should have a preload 1.5 to 2 inch pounds of force to keep the spindle moving after it has been started from rest, I use a digital fish scale (real precision I know) and the scales do not have Inch pounds on them so you need to convert that to Ounces of force which is 6.267 which is 1 Inch pound so times that by 1.5 = 9.400 Ounces to 2 Inch pounds = 12.534 Ounces measured off a 2" diameter bar in the chuck and that is a little bit of messing around to get the right feel of it.

I thought that I would put up a photo of the gear train alignment when the headstock is reset into it's position, the gearbox or leadscrew bracket (front bearing) need to be on the machine with the change gear bracket and the idler gear or gears if it is a B or C model lined up and then the headstock is put into it's correct alignment and tightened up.

I was referring to the B and C model lathes with the lead screw bearing at the headstock end instead of the model A gearbox and not the taper bearings.

    And.the.part.number.on.the.taper.bearing.is.usually.not.the.same.as.the.serial.number.on.the.lathe.bed.(unless.you.are.that.one.lucky.proud.Hercus.owner.with.the.magical.lathe.with.the.same."serial".number.on.lathe.bed,tailstock,gearbox.and.taper.bearing).
