    From the serial number my AR appears to be around the 1968 vintage.

    When I get a moment, I'll plug Steve's motor pulley dimensions into my spreadsheet and see how close the result matches the ToT. The motor pulley appears to be a bit bigger than mine, so it should produce a faster set of numbers. I'll have to assume the other pulley cones are the same as mine.

    Yes, the diagram shows a forward/reverse switch connection. Your motor swap idea sounds like a good way to see if the motor (or the starting cap in the motor) is the problem. It is nice to know that thinking about the electricals, helped 'spark' a thought or two!

    Understand what you mean about the cheaper end of the Chinese lathe scale. I had a look at a AL51G from H&F a while back and was a bit shocked by the build quality. The drive belt looked a bit like a rubber band. The sales bloke reckons that has been a source of failure and frustration for years, but the manufacturer wont change it. I gather the strength of the top slide mount is a bit of a weak point. Having said that, they do have a following, and I know some blokes who have produced some nice work on them. Lots on the web about how to improve them. Buy a Hercus I reckon.

    I plugged your pulley diameters into my spreadsheet and all other things being equal (your other pulleys and motor being the same as mine) your top speed will be around 2550rpm under no load (assuming a motor speed of 1485). I have used the outer diameter measurement of each pulley in the train to calculate the ratio - not sure how accurate this is, as the V belt will not always settle into each V at the same depth (diameter of the steel pulley to V belt depth is slightly different for each of the pulleys in the cone pulley pack - or at least to my eye - therefore the ratio will vary a bit). Anyway, all very academic, but perhaps interesting to see the variations that came out of the factory.
    Be interesting to see what speeds you measure once you have fired up the machine and put a tacho on it.

    I've followed your restorations with great interest. They look fantastic - they look as good (maybe better....) than new. Great paint job - a bit jealous; made me think I should have taken a bit more time prepping mine. Ah well, next time.
    We had some discussion about speeds. Have you had a chance to measure the speeds accross the ranges? Just curious.

    Hi Tony

    Thanks for the feedback, I learnt from the first lathe I did about putting a bit more time into the prep work and I also had a good mate not let me get away with close enough with these, he was more fastidious than I at times but the finish is great on them.
    I have not had a chance to check the speeds of the lathe but I am hoping to get my tacho back and measure it soon and I will let you know what the speeds are.

    I have finally checked the speed ranges of the lathe and they aren't too far off of the book, seems to be around 30 RPM differences roughly.

    High speed ranges are 2600,1820, 1385,1030,495,350,270,200

    Slow speed ranges are 1120,800,600,450,220,150,115,85.

    It doesn't the best with the gearbox running in the high ranges but I guess that they were designed for the speeds, just have to keep the oil flowing through it when it is running in the fast ranges.

    Steve, thanks for posting that - very interesting. We established previously that you had slightly different pulleys to mine; the counter shaft one was pretty much the same, but the motor pulley was slightly smaller on mine, which would explain the slower speeds I was getting across the board. I gather there were numerous combinations that came out of the factory (so others have advised on the forum), but it would appear your combination must have been pretty much the set that was used when Hercus published their advertising info on the high speed version of the AR.
    I must put up some photos now that the lathe has been in use for a while - I have added a QCTP and have used the taper turning attachment (which is poetry to watch, but not so much fun to set up!!).
