Default Rebuilding 2 lathes at the same time

    Hi All

Thought that I would share some photo's of how my lathes are coming along, the cabinets are coming along nicely and I will post more pic's as I am going along.

    Thanks for looking.

Are you rebuilding or just repainting?

I have had the beds reground, new headstock bearings, replaced the bushes in the gearboxes and making new shafts which will be ground finished, replacing anything else that needs replacing, upgrading one of the machines to roller bearing countershaft as one all ready has it, so fairly well rebuilding them from the ground up.

The green was scanned from an original part and it looked close until I painted it on the cabinet and then it was way too dark so I softened it up with a bit of cream colour in the paint, it is close to it but considering the 2 machines were slightly different shades to start with it is a bit hard to match it exactly, it probably could have been lighter still but I am happy with the outcome.

Looks like they are going to come up nice. I wouldn't be too stressed about the colour, I have two gray hercus's and they are both appear to be different grays from factory.

I actually got some paint matched up on the weekend to suit my 9a as I thought I might give her a birthday. I got the paint matched as I wasn't sure just how far I would go with the painting and thought if it was a close match then it wont be too ugly if I don't do a full tear down and paint. My main objective at the start is really just the tail stock, saddle and compound as the paint is quite chipped here and makes cleaning up a bit difficult as it just holds all the chips and oil when you try to wipe or brush it down.

Mind if I ask what paint you used? I've previously used White Knight Rust Guard in Woodland Grey for other machines and quite liked the paint. Bunnings however said they couldn't get a match in that paint and steered me to the Dulux Metal Shield. I used some on the weekend on a different project and it is so thin. Its going to be an absolute minimum 2 coat job where I found the Rust Guard was often good with a single coat. I mean that's fine, but it just seems to be more turps/thinner than pigment. I've used brushing to good effect in the past but given the thinness of this paint I think I'll try spraying it and see what the coverage is like.

    Hi Hornet

I used a brand called solver this time which was Crowhurst paints who were the original supplier of paint to Hercus, it is owned by Wattyl now I think, the paint i used is a satin finish interior enamel as it is easier to clean than flat yet still has the semi gloss look. The problem I have found with these is you want them to look really good and then the first time you use it they normally get some scratching

The cabinets look good Steve, making me feel ashamed about the state of mine. How did you go about preparing the metalwork for painting?

My ARL has the same doored and open shelved cabinets as yours and to remove the superficial rust and old paint I imagine sandblasting would be the most efficient method. Less efficient but probably more manageable for me might be a palm sander and maybe paint stripper.

    Hi Bob

    Thank you

The cabinets were just sanded back but they weren't that bad to start with, then they were undercoated and we painted them with a roller, there were a few holes to fill in so I welded them up and used car bog to smooth them over and also found the spray putty in a can to work quite well over some of the smaller blemishes. It had 2 top coats on them. The problem I found with the paint is it went a lot darker than I thought it would when it dried so keep that in mind when getting the paint mixed.

Still have a long way to go but they should look fairly good when they are finished and if they are as smooth running as the first one I did, I will be a very happy man.

Re paint, I used Killrust wilderness when I restored my Hercus a few years ago.
The paint was a very close match to the original on my lathe, unfortunately as we have moved I have not had time to finish of the electrics, built a house instead.

Hercus 9" restoration, a few Questions started the post on the 20th Jul 2012, Not sure if the photos are still attached.

    Default More Green Paint

Thought that I would upload some photos of the progress on the lathes, I still have a fair way to go but they are coming up a treat thanks to a very good friend of mine that has been putting a lot of effort in to the painting of these.

The paint job looks real professional, you should be real happy to have a mate that'll do something like that for you.
