Hercus Tool Post.
Hey guys;
im very close to having my ARM Hercus running now; Just wondering if any one uses an AXA Wedge type QCTP, i can only find them out of america, does any one know if there is a supplier that sell them in Aus? (Without charging like a bull).
Further more; where would i be able to find a 4 jaw chuck? i have a 3 jaw already but a 4 jaw is handy to have around aswell. are there any other types that fit these machines other than a Burnard.
Thanks All.

Have you considered a piston type tool post, a few here will probably state that the wedge is better, I am not sure how one is better than the other when used on this type of lathe.
The piston type can be purchased locally for less than $90.00.
In regards the 4 jaw you can run any brand you like.
You will pay reasonable money if you want an 8" screw on chuck ( without back plate ) , most other sizes are a reasonable price.
You can also get a plain back 4 jaw, it will only require you to purchase or make a thread backing plate for it.

I have a new Phase 2 axa wedge post that is surplus to my needs, yours for $200, it has a boring bar holder, a knurling thingy and a parting blade holder, so you would need to get some standard turning and facing holders, you would also need to machine the tee nut as it hasn't been done, I got it from enco in the states, pm me if interested, I bought it and before it arrived I found a another similar one in oz so now I have 2.

The wedge is more rigid. The piston type constrains the tool holder with the face of the piston and the angled faces of the two dovetails. The wedge types use the angled faces of the dovetails and the flat faces that are outide of the dovetail. Its a larger area and its a contact area that is spread out further, which both aid rigidity.

Still would think the ridgidty factor on these size machines would not play a very big factor at all.
If there was a reasonable cost saving of one against the other in this circumstance I would also suggest to go with the cheaper.

I currently use a piston type on my 260, and don't notice any obvious shortcoming.
A couple of days ago, I took 100mm length of a light cut from MS bar, before I noticed I'd forgotten to tighten the tool holder piston!
It wasn't too bad a cut at that.

A shaper is on the shopping list.... i feel so old saying that, i think i might be one of the only 20 year olds that owns one... let along knows how to use one.
The model shapers, all be it hand driven seem like a pretty nifty idea! you wouldnt want to make a tool holder with one though.

Hey Country Kid, did you end up buying a wedge style tool post & 4 jaw chuck? Where did you get them from? I also want to buy a quick change tool post and 4 jaw independent chuck for my 260. Id rather not pay a lot for postage from USA when the parts are coming from asia anyway.

I put an order in at CTC tools on the 5th of January. Since then my order status has been sitting at "Awaiting fulfillment". I've sent 2 emails to them asking when the order will be filled and shipped, but I've had no response. Is this normal service from this company? Seems pretty poor to me. Anyone else bought from CTC lately?

No I havent tried, (or needed) to speak to them. My order specified 9 weeks delivery, (which is about up now) so I will give it another week or so before I start to worry

Hi Country kid,
I tried to by get it from Fiora and Hares & Forbes, so expensive. I settled for an L280 QSTP. works fine.
